IRISH LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST WILLIAM & MARY

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (2-1) will play host to the first of eight home games on Saturday this season when William & Mary (1-2) visits Purcell Pavilion for the first time since 1982. The game will mark the third of four contests for each team during the 2018 Gotham Classic. 

Notre Dame is hosting the entirety of its participation in the 2018 Gotham Classic at Purcell Pavilion, marking the first time in program history the Irish will compete in a full exempt tournament at home. William & Mary is 0-2 thus far in the event, falling 84-70 at Duquesne and 100-95 in overtime at UIC Thursday night.  

WILLIAM & MARY QUICK FACTS

  • Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, William & Mary is a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference.    
  • The College of William & Mary was founded in February of 1693 and was named in honor of the reigning monarchs at the time – King William III and Queen Mary II. It is the second-oldest college in the United States. 
  • Future presidents  Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler all graduated from William & Mary. 
  • The Tribe finished 19-12 in 2017-18 and 11-7 in the CAA to finish fourth. They return starting players Matt Milon, Nathan Knight and Justin Pierce. 

NOTRE DAME vs. WILLIAM & MARY

  • The Irish and Tribe are meeting for just the second time and the first since a 90-45 Notre Dame victory on December 30, 1982. 
  • John Paxson led the Irish with 20 points and five assists in the 1982 meeting, while Kevin Richardson paced the Tribe with 12 points.   
  • Notre Dame is 16-0 all-time against the Colonial Athletic Assocation with most of the victories (seven) coming against Hofstra.

Returning starters for the Irish in 2017-18 (Rex Pflueger, T.J. Gibbs), matching the 2002-03 and 2009-10 seasons for the lowest in the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present).

Notre Dame finished the UIC game (11/6/18) 36-38 at the free throw line. It was the third-best free throw shooting performance for a team with 35 FTA or more since 1996-97. See page 2 of this notes package for more details.

The Irish committed just four turnovers against Radford marking the 13th time a Notre Dame Mike Brey team has committed less than five turnovers in a game. It was the least amount of team turnovers since the Irish gave it away three times against Pittsburgh on Jan. 9, 2016.

Notre Dame begins the 2018-19 season with a seven-game homestand – the longest to begin a season since 1986. It is the second-longest of the Mike Brey era, as the Irish played six straight at home to begin the 2013-14 season.

The freshman class of Robby Carmody, Dane Goodwin, Prentiss Hubb, Nate Laszewski and Chris Doherty was ranked 10th in the nation by ESPN – the highest recruting class rating of the Brey era.

With six three pointers against Radford, John Mooney became the 11th player of the Mike Brey era to connect on six three-point field goals in more than one career game. Mooney also is the tallest player on the list at 6-9, ahead of current Irish assistant Ryan Ayers (6-8, 3 games with six or more 3FGs) and V.J. Beachem (6-8, 4).

Junior John Mooney led the Irish with a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Radford on Wednesday night. It also marked the second double-double of Mooney’s career and the third time in his career he has connected on five or more three-point field goals in a single game.

Atlantic Coast Conference teams combined to win their first 30 games of the 2018-19 season, marking the best non-conference start in conference history (29-0 in 2003-04).

Saturday will mark William & Mary’s second visit to Purcell Pavilion and the first in just under 36 years (35 years, 10 months). The Irish defeated the Tribe 90-45 on Dec. 30, 1982.

Notre Dame has began the season 57-67 from the foul line (85.1) which is the third-best percentage in the country through the games of November 14. The Irish are the only Power 5 basketball program to rank in the top 10 in the nation for free throw percentage.

With 504 career wins, Mike Brey is the 11th active coach to reach that career milestone coaching at just one or two institutions.
