The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (2-0) continues the 2018 Gotham Classic against Radford (2-0) at Purcell Pavilion Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET). The Irish are 1-0 in the event (84-67 victory over UIC on Nov. 6), as are the Highlanders who defeated UIC 88-78 on Friday, Nov. 9.

Notre Dame is hosting the entirety of its participation in the 2018 Gotham Classic at Purcell Pavilion, marking the first time in program history the Irish will compete in a full exempt tournament at home.

RADFORD QUICK FACTS

  • Located in Radford, Virginia, the Highlanders are a member of the Big South Conference.
  • The 2017-18 Big South Champions, Radford defeated LIU Brooklyn in the NCAA Tournament last season before falling to Villanova.
  • Radford returns three starters from its 2017-18 conference championship squad (Carlik Jones, Donald Hicks and Ed Polite, Jr.).

NOTRE DAME vs. RADFORD

  • Wednesday will mark the first meeting between Notre Dame and Radford in men’s basketball.
  • Notre Dame is 4-1 against teams from the Big South (1-0 vs. Charleston Southern, 3-0 vs. Liberty, 0-1 vs. Winthrop).

FREE THROW SHOOTING STRENGTH CONTINUES

Notre Dame has led the ACC in free throw shooting the past two seasons, posting a school and ACC record .800 in 2016-17 and following up with a .758 mark to pace the league in 2017-18. If the first two contests of 2018-19 are any indication, Notre Dame should be among the league leaders from the charity stripe again throughout the year.

The Irish are 50-57 from the free throw line in two games, good enough to rank fourth in the NCAA. The team’s remarkable 36-38 performance against UIC is among the best in the sport since the 1996-97 season:

Notre Dame finished the UIC game (11/6/18) 36-38 at the free throw line. It was the third-best free throw shooting performance for a team with 35 FTA or more since 1996-97. See page 2 of this notes package for more details.

Under Mike Brey, the Irish have earned four in-season tournament titles, the 2001 Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Classic, the 2010 Old Spice Classic, the 2016 Legends Classic and the 2017 Maui Invitational.

7

Notre Dame begins the 2018-19 season with a seven-game homestand – the longest to begin a season since 1986. It is the second-longest of the Mike Brey era, as the Irish played six straight at home to begin the 2013-14 season.

9

The Irish will be putting a school-record-matching nine-game in-season tournament win streak on the line when the Gotham Classic continues on Wednesday, Nov. 14 vs. Radford. Notre Dame won the 2016 Legends Classic, sweeping four games in the event and also posted four wins in the 2017 Maui Invitational (three on the island) to claim the program’s first Maui title.

The freshman class of Robby Carmody, Dane Goodwin, Prentiss Hubb, Nate Laszewski and Chris Doherty was ranked 10th in the nation by ESPN – the highest recruting class rating of the Brey era.

36

Notre Dame attacked the offensive back baord in the first two games of the season, hauling down 18 offensive rebounds in both games. That two-game total is the most since the Irish followed up the 20 offensive rebounds against North Carolina last season (1/13/18) with a school-record 26 offensive rebounds against Louisville (1/16/18) to post 46 offensive rebounds in a two-game span.

39

The players off the Notre Dame bench combined to score 39 of the team’s 84 points in the victory over UIC. That includes a game-high 12 points from freshman Nate Laszewski.

71

The four players active in the Notre Dame freshman class have combined to score 71 points in two games this season – a total that already surpasses three Brey-era rookie classes. See page 9 of this notes package for more details.

76

Notre Dame shot .758 from the free throw line in 2017-18, leading the ACC in team free throw shooting percentage for the second consecutive season. The Irish led the ACC and the NCAA in free throw shooting in 2016-17 (.800). Notre Dame began the season with an incredible showing at the free throw line vs. UIC, going 36 of 38 at the line (.947).

83

The Notre Dame bench has combined to score 83 points in the first two games of the season. That total is the most in the Mike Brey era and the most since 1999 (the Irish totaled 76 bench points vs. St. Peter’s and Elon that year).

88

Notre Dame has started the 2018-19 season 50-57 from the free throw line in two games, good enough to rank fourth in the NCAA free throw percentage rankigns (.877) as of November 12.

With 504 career wins, Mike Brey is the 11th active coach to reach that career milestone coaching at just one or two institutions.

2002

Or to be more precise, the 2002-03 season. Robby Carmody became the first Notre Dame true freshman to start the first game of the season since Torin Francis against Belmont on Nov. 17, 2002.
