Irish Earn Ninth Sweep in Win Over Virginia Tech

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Virginia Tech to improve to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the ACC. The Irish earned 25-14 wins in each of the first two sets before capturing the third frame, 25-20, to seal the 3-0 win. It marks the ninth sweep of the season for the Irish. 

Junior Jemma Yeadon paced the Irish attack with 18 kills while hitting .424. Freshman Charley Niego was also a force up front, adding 13 kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Freshman Zoe Nunez totaled 41  assists through three sets of play.

Niego also led the Irish with 10 digs while senior Ryann DeJarld added nine and senior Kelly Byrne totaled eight. Notre Dame limited the Hokies to just a .126 hitting percentage in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set
Yeadon powered the Irish in the opening set with six kills as Notre Dame took the first frame 25-14. Leading 9-8, the Irish took control of the set with a 9-3 run that included four kills by Yeadon. Notre Dame closed the stanza on a 5-0 run, with a kill from Niego sealing the set win. In total, the Irish collected 18 kills in the first set with a hitting percentage of .405.

Second Set
After a 4-1 Notre Dame spurt gave the Irish a 5-3 lead, the hosts led the rest of the way to take the second set, 25-14. The Irish attack stayed hot in the second frame, totaling 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage. Niego and Yeadon paced Notre Dame with five kills each in the frame.

Third Set
The Hokies opened up a 4-1 lead to start the third set, but the Irish responded with a 7-0 run to earn a four-point advantage. Virginia Tech battled back with 6-1 streak of its own to eventually even the score, 13-13. Notre Dame broke a 16-all deadlock by earning six of the next seven points. Once again it was Yeadon spearheading the Irish run, recording a trio of kills in that stretch for Notre Dame. A kill from Niego sealed the 25-20 set win and the straight-set victory for the Irish.

UP NEXT
The Irish head back out on the road next week for a pair of matches against Pittsburgh and Virginia. Notre Dame takes on the Panthers on Friday (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. before meeting the Cavaliers Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
