Need To Know: ITA Midwest Regional Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team will host the 2015 ITA Midwest Regional Championships, beginning October 22 and running through Oct. 26 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion and Lakeland Athletic Club (Niles, Michigan).

Below, find all the need-to-know info as the Irish kick off competition with qualifying singles rounds on Thursday:

Gracious Hosts
This will be the first time since 2010 that Notre Dame has hosted Midwest Regional Championships, and fourth time overall. The winners of each doubles and singles draw will receive bids to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, November 12-15 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. It will be the only home fall action for the Irish, who won’t return to the Eck Tennis Pavilion until their dual season-opening double-header against Michigan State and Youngstown State on January 16, 2016.

Midwest Regional Breakdown
The tournament will consist of singles and doubles draws, with two rounds of qualifying singles played Thursday. The main draws will commence Friday and run through Monday’s championships. The Irish will have four players seeded in the qualifying round with Daniel Rayl (No. 8), Drew Dawson (No. 11), Nathan Griffin (No. 13) and Brendon Kempin (No. 14). Seven more Irish will be seeded in the main draw, with fifth-ranked Quentin Monaghan, Eric Schnurrenberger, Grayson Broadus, Alex Lawson, Eddy Covalschi, Kenneth Sabacsinski and Nicolas Montoya also competing. Main draw seeds will be released later Wednesday.

Qualifying Matchups
The four Irish players competing in qualifying singles will begin play at 8 a.m. Thursday:
Drew Dawson (ND) vs. Daniel Loebel (WMU), 8 a.m. Lakeland Athletic Club
Nathan Griffin (ND) vs. Gleb Sklyr (Marq), 9 a.m. Eck Tennis Pavilion
Daniel Rayl (ND) vs. Mackenzie Stearns (Marq), 10 a.m. Eck Tennis Pavilion
Brendon Kempin (ND) vs. Lucas Waak (Valpo), 10 a.m. Lakeland Athletic Club

Rankings
Four men’s tennis student-athletes appeared in the first Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, with two appearing in both singles and doubles polls. In addition to Quentin Monaghan and his No. 5 ranking, junior Josh Hagar will enter the season ranked No. 114 in singles. Hagar also makes an appearance in the doubles rankings with classmate Eddy Covalschi, coming in at No. 10. Hagar and Covalschi played together throughout the 2014-15 season, compiling a 17-12 record to go with the ITA Midwest Regional Doubles crown, and ended the year at No. 35. Monaghan and Alex Lawson enter the season ranked No. 28 in doubles.
