NCAA Preview: Statesboro Regional

STATESBORO, Ga. — The No. 2 seed Notre Dame baseball team is down in Georgia to start the 2022 NCAA Baseball Championship at the Statesboro Regional. The Irish begin the postseason with No. 3 Texas Tech Friday afternoon from J.I. Clements Stadium. Friday’s game is set for a 2 p.m ET start from Statesboro and will be aired nationally on the ACC Network. Depending on the Irish result, they will play at either 1 p.m. ET or 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Irish Off to Statesboro Regional

  • The Irish earned their 24th berth in program history when they got selected as the No. 2 seed in the Statesboro Regional.
  • They are joined by the No. 16 national seed and host Georgia Southern, Texas Tech and UNC Greensboro.
  • Three of the four teams in the regional were ranked in the most recent D1Baseball poll with the Irish coming in at #17, Georgia Southern at #21 and Texas Tech at #24.
  • The Statesboro Regional is one of two regionals (Stanford) that have three ranked teams in the regional.
  • Georgia Southern went 40-18 during the regional season and 23-7 in Sun Belt play. They finished second in the conference during the regular season and fell in the the Sun Belt Championship game to Louisiana.
  • The Irish have not played Georgia Southern before in their program history and it will be the first ever matchup if the two teams square off over the course of the weekend.
  • Texas Tech went 37-20 on the year and 15-9 in Big 12 play. They finished second in the conference during the regular season and went 1-2 at the Big 12 Championship.
  • The Irish and Red Raiders have faced off once before in program history. The Irish won 6-1 on March 14, 2004 in a neutral site match at Round Rock, Texas.
  • UNC Greensboro went 34-28 during the regular season and 12-9 in Southern conference play. They finished third in the league in the regular season and won the Southern Conference tournament after winning six of seven and five-straight games to clinch the title.
  • The Irish have yet to play UNC Greensboro in program history but head coach Link Jarrett spent seven years as the head coach at UNCG prior to coming to Notre Dame.

Irish Finish Pool Play Undefeated with 3-0 Shutout of #15 Virginia

  • The Irish closed out pool play with one of its best pitching performances of the season in the 3-0 win over #15 Virginia.
  • It was the third time the Irish have shut out an ACC opponent this season and the first time Virginia has been shut out since March 5, 2021.
  • Liam Simon had a career day with 5.0 innings pitched and he tied a career high with eight strikeouts.
  • 4 different Irish relievers combined for the final four innings with Aidan Tyrell earning the save in the final inning.

Irish Advance to Semifinals with 5-3 win over Florida State

  • The Irish advanced to the ACC semifinals for the first time in program history after the 5-3 win over Florida State to begin pool play.
  • John Michael Bertrand stymied the Seminoles for the second time this season as he tossed 8.0 innings of work and allowed just one unearned run and struck out seven.
  • Over the two starts this season against the Seminoles, he has pitched 15.2 innings and has not allowed an earned run. He has struck out 20 batters over the two appearances.
  • The Irish bats got the long ball working against first team All-ACC pitcher Parker Messick.
  • The Irish hit three home runs against Messick, tied for the most Messick has allowed in a start in his career.
  • Zack Prajzner hit a solo shot in the third, Jack Zyska hit a two-run blast in the fourth and Brooks Coetzee III also hit a two-run shot in the fifth.
  • The Seminoles attempted to rally in the ninth with the go-ahead run at the plate but Alex Rao recorded the final out for the save.

  • Since the start of the 2020 season, the Irish have been one of the most consistent teams over the past three seasons.
  • Notre Dame is 80-29, good for a .734 winning percentage over that period.
