NABC Names Brey As District Coach Of The Year

The National Association of Basketball Coaches have announced their postseason awards for the 2022 men’s college basketball season. Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey was named the District 2 Coach of the Year, while senior Dane Goodwin and freshman Blake Wesley earned second-team all-district honors.

Brey led the Irish back to the NCAA tournament this season, as Notre Dame finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 15-5 record – the most conference wins in program history. After December 20, Notre Dame won 18 of 23 games to earn the 13th NCAA appearance of the Brey era (since 2000-01).

Goodwin was among the most consistent and accurate shooters in college basketball this season. He is the only player in the nation shooting .500 from the field, .440 from three-point range, .850 from the free throw line and scoring over 13 points per game. He earned third-team all-ACC honors by the league last week.

Wesley established himself as one of the most balanced and talented true freshman in the country and is the only rookie to amass 450 points, 100 rebounds, 75 assists, 50 three-point field goals and 30 steals in college basketball this season. He hit the game-winning shot against Kentucky (which earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament) in December and lead the Irish in scoring with 14.6 points per game.

The Irish begin their run in the NCAA tournament on Wednesday, March 16, against Rutgers in the NCAA First Four at Dayton. The game will be broadcast on TruTV at 9:10 p.m. ET.
