NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame volleyball freshman libero Taylor Morey and sophomore opposite side hitter Jeni Houser were both honored by the BIG EAST on Monday for their performances over the weekend in Nebraska.
Morey, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, recorded 50 digs over the weekend as she played in her first collegiate matches. Included in the total was a 29-dig performance in a 3-1 loss to No. 1 UCLA. The total puts her in 15th place in school history for a single match, with nine of the 14 performances above hers coming in five setters. She had 12 digs and three assists in a 3-0 win over Saint Louis on Saturday and chipped in nine more in a 3-0 loss to No. 4 Nebraska on Sunday. She led the team in digs against UCLA and Nebraska and tied for the lead against Saint Louis.
Houser, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, connected on 37 kills as she hit .308 over the weekend. The Louisville, Ky., native got the year started on the right foot on Friday as she pounded out 17 kills, while committing only four errors, on her way to hitting .464 against the top-seeded Bruins. Houser followed that up with 10 kills each against Saint Louis and Nebraska. A 2011 second team all-BIG EAST selection, Houser earns her second appearance on the weekly honor roll.
The Irish (1-2) open their home portion of the schedule this weekend when they welcome in UAB, Buffalo and Eastern Kentucky for the annual Shamrock Invitational. The weekend gets underway at 4:30 p.m. ET with Eastern Kentucky and Buffalo. Notre Dame gets the weekend started when it plays at 7 p.m. ET against UAB.
