EDITOR’S NOTE: The Notre Dame Monogram Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2015-16. In honor of reaching the century mark, Fighting Irish Media will present a look at some of the top student-athletes and moments from each Notre Dame sport. We recognize the significant contributions of all of our student-athletes in all of our Fighting Irish sports and realize the following list, while noteworthy, is not all-inclusive.
Volleyball’s Monogram Moments
Here are some of the top performers during volleyball’s Monogram era…
Zanette Bennett: One of the first great players in Notre Dame volleyball history, Bennett was a two-time player of the year in the North Star Conference and is ranked first in school history in triple-doubles (4) and fourth in kills (1,471) … she is also ninth in blocks (434) and 10th in service aces (111) … Bennett helped lead Notre Dame to its first NCAA appearance in program history as a senior in 1988.
Lauren Brewster: The only second team AVCA All-American in program history, Brewster also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors to wrap up a spectacular senior campaign (2005) … she is the program leader in total blocks (734) and is third in kills (1,492) and attack percentage (.314) … she was the NCAA blocking champion in 2003 … Brewster helped lead the Irish to their last Round of 16 finish (2005) and she appeared in the NCAA Championship all four years of career.
Angie Harris: Harris made an immediate impact with the Irish, earning Volleyball Magazine All-Freshman Team honors in 1994 before competing at the U.S. Olympic Festival … Harris is the program leader in service aces (239) by over 100, is second in kills (1,577) and 13th in digs (1,043) to become one of only eight players in program history to reach the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig mark.
Jaimie Lee: An NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient in 1998, Lee was both a Volleyball Magazine All-American and a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1997 after earning back-to-back BIG EAST Player of the Year trophies in 1996 and 1997 … she participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival in both 1994 and 1995 and was a team captain at the 1997 World University Games before participating in the USA Volleyball A2 Program … impressive, four-year career included 1,446 kills (6th – school history) and 1,142 digs (11th), making her one of just eight players in school history to record at least 1,000 for a career in both categories.
NOTE: Harris & Lee graduated in 1997 with a combined 3,023 kills, which is the most combined kills by classmates in program history … they led the Irish to four-consecutive NCAA appearances during their career.
Christy Peters: A two-time third team All-American in 1993 and 1994, Peters participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1993 and earned Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year accolades twice (1993 & 1994) … she is the school’s all-time leader in kills (1,683) and is one of just eight players in program history to hit the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig mark … Peters helped lead the Irish to the NCAA Championship during her final three years on campus (1992-94).
