Seventy-six members of the Notre Dame family were presented with their Monogram jackets on Wednesday at the 2019 Spring Monogram Jacket Ceremony. The event, which was held inside Club Naimoli at Purcell Pavilion, honored first-time Monogram winners from Notre Dame’s fall sports along with student athletic trainers and cheerleaders.
Fighting Irish great Justin Tuck (’05, football) was the featured alumni speaker. The two-time Super Bowl champion delivered an impactful speech on why Notre Dame and the Monogram Club are so meaningful to him. He told the honorees that they won’t know the true power of Notre Dame until they leave campus and encounter others who want to know what makes the University so special. Tuck also was presented with a new Monogram jacket.
Patricia Bellia (honorary), O’Neill Professor of Law and Notre Dame Presidential Fellow in the Notre Dame Law School, addressed the attendees on behalf of the athletics department. Bellia, the chair of the University’s Faculty Board on Athletics, touched on the history of the Monogram. She noted the significance of what it represents, which is teamwork, resilience, discipline, empathy, efficiency, dignity and perseverance. Bellia also discussed the distinct look of the Monogram, how it symbolizes the tradition of Notre Dame Athletics and that its appearance has remained consistent throughout its storied history.
Alohi Gilman (’20, football) provided the student-athlete reflection. The starting safety on the Fighting Irish football team garnered his first Monogram after helping Notre Dame to a perfect 12-0 regular season last fall and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Gilman, a transfer from the Naval Academy, talked about his journey to Notre Dame. He spoke of how change is part of everyone’s life and how change helps people grow as individuals and student-athletes. Gilman said embracing change led him to that moment when he received his Monogram jacket.

At ND, the monogram is more than a logo. It is a representation of dreams igniting relentless pursuit, goals turned accomplishments accompanied by a mission to leave ND better than you found it. This understanding of being part of something bigger than “me” is what sets us apart. pic.twitter.com/UqgCUZ4D6N
