Jan. 29, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After clinching a huge 4-0 win over No. 31 Memphis for the No. 30 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team Sunday, freshman Quentin Monaghan has earned BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.

Playing at No. 3 singles, Monaghan went 2-1 on the week to run his record to 4-1 in his first dual season with the Irish. After a tough loss to No. 37 Northwestern, Monaghan came back and picked up wins over Nicky Hu from Harvard, 6-4, 6-4, and Lukas Vrnak from Memphis, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to close out the week. The win over Vrnak sealed the win over the Tigers for the Irish.

Monaghan is the second consecutive Irish student-athlete to earn weekly honors, following in the footsteps of teammate Greg Andrews.

The Chatham, N.J., native and the rest of his Notre Dame teammates return to action Sunday when they meet No. 5 Duke at 12 p.m. and IUPUI at 6 p.m. at Eck Tennis Pavilion. Fans can follow both matches through live stats, with links provided on UND.com.
