May 6, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame head men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has been elected chairman of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee. Brey currently is serving his fourth year on the rules committee.

Brey replaces Bobby Lutz, the former coach at Charlotte, as the committee chairman. The general duties of the committee are to stay in touch with rules issues during the season and to compare ideas and gauge opinions on potential rules changes with colleagues in conference and region.

“This is my fourth year on the NCAA Rules Committee and it is an honor to now serve as chair of such an important committee,” says Brey. “Obviously, college basketball is in great shape. But we always want to be mindful of how our game is changing, trends in the game, and what we want our game to look like.”

Brey just completed his 10th season on the Fighting Irish sidelines. He owns a record of 211-113 at Notre Dame and an overall career mark of 310-165. Prior to joining the Irish, Brey was the head coach at the University of Delaware for five seasons (1995-2000).

The Fighting Irish are coming off a 23-12 campaign. Notre Dame, winners of six of its final eight games during the 2009-10 season, earned the South Region’s No. 6 seed for the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Brey, a two-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year honoree, has guided Notre Dame to postseason play during all 10 of his seasons with the Fighting Irish. He has steered the Irish to six NCAA Tournament appearances and four NIT berths.
