Notre Dame’s top-seeded junior All-American Michelle Dasso and fourth-seeded sophomore Becky Varnum each won a pair of singles matches and teamed up for a doubles win on Friday to advance to the third round of both the singles and doubles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Region championships at Ohio State. Dasso dropped just six games in beating Western Illinois’ Erika Offerdahl 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Detroit’s Maria Pandele 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. Varnum also lost only six games in winning 6-1, 6-1 over Michigan State’s Brooke Townsend in the first round and 6-4, 6-0 over Northwestern’s Jennifer Lutgert. Play continues on Saturday and runs through Monday.

Dasso will meet Indiana’s Zahra Ahamed on Saturday for a spot in the quarterfinals, while Varnum will play ninth-seeded Katherine Nasser of Northwestern. Following singles, the No. 5-8 seeded team of Dasso and Varnum won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 over Gerding and Poulas of Ball State. Senior Kelly Lindsey and sophomore Lindsey Green dropped a 6-1, 6-3 first-round doubles match to Minnesota’s Sauska and Simonsen. Junior Kimberly Guy and freshman Katie Cunha also lost in the doubles first round, falling 6-3, 7-6 to Marquette’s Sara Fernandez and Laura Garcia.

In other singles matches, sophomore Nina Vaughan took out Ohio State’s No. x player 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before losing to Purdue’s second-seeded Jennifer Embry 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the second round. Green defeated Northern Illinois’ Carrie Townsend 6-3, 6-2 in the first round before falling 6-4, 6-3 to No. 9-16 seed Colleen Cheng of Northwestern in the second round. Zalinski lost 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1 to Fernandez in the first round. Senior Sarah Scaringe also fell in the first round, losing 6-3, 6-2 to third-seeded Kristy Dascoli of Ohio State.
