MALIBU, Calif. — Notre Dame junior All-American Michelle Dasso and sophomore Becky Varnum lost in the second round of the NCAA doubles championship on Tuesday at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Pepperdine’s Paola Palencia and Ipek Senoglu eliminated the 20th-ranked Irish team with a 6-3, 6-4 win to advance to the quarterfinals. Dasso and Varnum end the season with a 19-6 record, after beating Oklahoma’s Viviana Mracnova and Angela Steoup in the first round on Monday.

Palencia and Senoglu, ranked sixth in the country but not one of the eight seeded teams in the 32-team field, won five of the last six games in the first set and six of the last seven games in the second set for the win. Dasso and Varnum led 2-1 in the first set and 3-0 in the second set before the Waves rallied to win in straight sets.
