NEW YORK – Former University of Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals and was the first Fighting Irish player taken in this year’s draft. He became the 62nd former Notre Dame player to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Floyd is the highest-drafted player from Notre Dame since defensive tackle Bryant Young was the seventh-overall selection by San Francisco in the 1994 draft. Floyd is the first Notre Dame wide receiver to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since Tim Brown in 1988 (sixth overall by Oakland) and is the earliest an offensive player from Notre Dame has been drafted since quarterback Rick Mirer and running back Jerome Bettis were selected with the second and 10th picks, respectively, of the 1993 draft by Seattle and the Los Angeles Rams.

“I could not be happier for Michael and his family,” Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. “I’ve said many times I have never coached a person as talented as Michael, and his selection tonight shows that. Michael’s work ethic and passion for football are unparalleled and fans of the Cardinals will love the productivity he’ll bring to Arizona’s offense.”

Floyd becomes the first Notre Dame player drafted by Arizona since the franchise moved from St. Louis. He is the first Fighting Irish player selected by the Cardinals since quarterback Rusty Lisch was taken in the fourth round (No. 89 overall) of the 1980 draft.

The most prolific wide receiver in Notre Dame history, Floyd owns five career receiving records, ranks in the top 10 on 11 single-season receiving lists and is in the top 10 on nine single-game lists. He is the Notre Dame career record holder for receptions (271), receiving yards (2,686), receiving touchdowns (37), average yards receiving per game (85.7) and games with at least 100 receiving yards (17).

Floyd started 41 of 43 career games played. He did not start his first game as a freshman, but then started the next 41 games in which he appeared. Floyd registered at least one reception in 42 of 43 games played. The only game he failed to make a reception was against Navy in 2008 when he was injured early in the first quarter and missed the remainder of the contest.

Floyd missed only one game in his final two seasons and started 24 of 25 games played. He totaled 179 receptions for 2,172 yards and 21 receiving TDs.

In his final season with the Fighting Irish in 2011, Floyd set a school record with 100 receptions for 1,147 yards and nine TDs. He earned second-team All-America accolades from Phil Steele and was an honorable mention All-American by SI.com and Pro Football Weekly.

He started all 12 games he appeared in during the 2010 season and paced the Irish with 79 catches for 1,025 yards and 12 TDs. The 79 receptions were the second most by an Irish player at the time (now ranks as third most in school history following Floyd’s 100 catches in 2011) and the 12 TD receptions tied for fourth most in a season by a Notre Dame player.

Floyd missed five games due to injury as a sophomore but still ranked second on the team with 44 receptions for 795 yards and nine TDs. He eclipsed 100 receiving yards in five of seven games played and averaged 18.1 yards per catch and 113.6 receiving yards per game.

In 2008, Floyd set freshman records at Notre Dame for receptions (48), receiving yards (719) and receiving TDs (seven). He became the fourth Irish freshman since 1983 to score a touchdown on his first career catch, joining Raghib “Rocket” Ismail and Derek Brown in 1988 and Derrick Mayes in 1992.
