NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman wide receiver Michael Floyd and senior free safety David Bruton each were honored this week for their play throughout the first half of the 2008 season.
Floyd was named to the Rivals.com Midseason Freshman All-America Team while Bruton was an honorable mention selection to the CollegeFootballNews.com Midseason All-America Team. In fact, of the 12 defensive backs named first team, second team or honorable mention, Bruton was the only free safety to be selected.
Floyd has tallied 27 receptions for 426 yards with four touchdowns this season and has caught at least one pass in every game. He ranks second on the team in receptions, receiving yards, average yards per catch and is tied for team-high honors in touchdowns.
The St. Paul, Minn., native is on pace to shatter every rookie receiving record at Notre Dame. He has already tied teammate Duval Kamara’s freshman record of four touchdown receptions and Floyd is rapidly approaching Kamara’s rookie record of 32 receptions in a season. Tony Hunter’s 29-year old record for most receiving yards by a freshman (690 yards) is also in jeopardy as Floyd sits 264 yards shy of Hunter’s mark.
Bruton is second on the team with 53 tackles and leads the Irish with 34 solo stops. He has been part of four turnovers already this season, intercepting two passes and forcing two fumbles that Notre Dame recovered. All four forced turnovers have occurred inside the Irish 20-yard line.
Against Michigan, the Miamisburg, Ohio, product tallied 15 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss to go with an interception and a forced fumble. Bruton added 10 tackles at Michigan State and nine more tackles vs. Stanford.
The Notre Dame football team is off this weekend and returns to the field Saturday, Oct. 25 at Washington.
