Providence, R.I. – For the second time this season, Notre Dame women’s lacrosse players have been named the BIG EAST offensive and defensive players of the week, this time for the week ending April 11.
Senior midfielder Meredith Simon (Flemington, N.J.) was selected the BIG EAST offensive player of the week for her play in third-ranked Notre Dame’s wins over Ohio University (13-8) and at Ohio State (14-6). For Simon, this marks the third time this year that she has been honored with a BIG EAST weekly award. On the defensive side, Irish goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Jr., Pennsauken, N.J.) was selected the BIG EAST co-defensive player of the week along with Georgetown midfielder Michi Ellers. For Dixon, this marks the second time this season that she has been named the league’s defensive player of the week.
In the two wins last week, Simon recorded six goals and three assists for nine points. Those totals give her a career-high 33 goals and 14 assists for 47 points on the year in just 10 games. Versus Ohio University, Simon scored three times and added a ground ball in the victory. At Ohio State on April 10, Simon scored three goals and added three assists for her fourth game of the season with six or more points, as the Irish won at Columbus by a 14-6 score. Simon also had two ground balls and two draw controls in the win. She extended her point-scoring streak to 21 games since March 25, 2003. During the streak, Simon has 55 goals and 21 assists for 76 points.
Carol Dixon ran her record to 10-0 with wins over Ohio University and Ohio State and was selected the BIG EAST co-defensive player of the week.
Dixon backstopped the Irish to a pair of wins on the week and is now 10-0 in her first season as the starting goalkeeper at Notre Dame. In the April 6 win over Ohio University, Dixon made 10 saves while giving up four goals in each half to the Bobcats. At Ohio State, Dixon turned in a career-high 14-save performance as the Irish downed the Buckeyes, 14-6. The Irish limited OSU to just one goal in the first half as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the contest. For the season, Dixon is 10-0 with a 7.82 goals-against average and a .554 save percentage. Both totals are in the top three in the BIG EAST and among the top 15 in the nation.
Simon was named BIG EAST offensive player of the week for March 8 and March 29th. Dixon’s previous honor was on March 1 after opening the season with two wins in California.
Simon and Dixon along with their Notre Dame teammates will return to action on Saturday, April 17th when the Irish travel to Georgetown to face the second-ranked Hoyas in a 1:00 p.m. game. Georgetown is 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in BIG EAST play.
