Men's Swimming and Diving In First After Day One Of Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team behind victories by the 200 freestyle relay team and sophomore Jamie Lutkus in the 200 individual medley is in first place with 682.50 points after day one of the Notre Dame Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Irish lead second-place Harvard by 256 points as the Crimson had 426 points, followed by West Virginia (387), North Dakota (298) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (227). Denison is sixth (225.50), followed by Indianapolis (177), Saint Louis (130, Denver (129), Louisville (108), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (58) and Shippensburg (24).

The Irish started the evening session with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of sophomore Tim Randolph, junior Frank Krakowski, freshman Tim Kegelman and freshman Louis Cavadini won in 1:22.41. The Irish just touched out BIG EAST Conference foe West Virginia, who was second in 1:22.66.

Notre Dame then placed five of eight swimmers in the championship final of the 500 freestyle as freshman Ted Brown was second in 4:31.46. North Dakota’s Rodrigo Cintra defended his title at the meet in the event with a winning time of 4:30.52. Irish senior Matt Obringer was fourth in 4:33.12, while sophomore Patrick Davis was fifth (4:33.49), junior Matt Bertke was seventh (4:37.74) and freshman Chris Zeches was eighth (4:37.86).

In the 200 individual medley, Notre Dame took the top six places as Lutkus won the race in 1:52.23. Junior David Moisan was a close second in 1:52.49, followed by senior Josh Dermott in 1:52.72. Kegelman was fourth in 1:53.28, then freshman Nick Fanslau in 1:53.78 and freshman Alan Carter in 1:54.03.

Randolph continued his solid night as he placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.77, while Krakowski tied for seventh in 21.27. West Virginia’s Matt Drodz was first in 20.55, while the Mountaineers’ Chris Hagedorn was second in 20.67.

The men’s diving competition was the closest finish of the evening as Harvard’s Enrique Roy was first with 288.45, only .05 points ahead of runner-up Sean Wilkinson of Louisville. Notre Dame freshman Scott Coyle was fourth with 266.05 points.

The Irish finished second in the 400 medley relay, the final event of the evening, as the team of sophomore Doug Bauman, Randolph, Kegelman and Krakowski touched the wall in 3:22.71. Harvard was first in 3:22.71, while Notre Dame’s second relay of Carter, Dermott, Cavadini and Fanslau was third in 3:24.55.
