The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team continued competition in the 2003 Notre Dame Invitational on Friday evening. The Irish will enter Saturday’s competition first in the meet standings with 1,564.5 points. The two of the highlights from the evening for the Irish included record setting performances in the 200 medley relay and the 400 individual medley.
The 200 medley relay team of sophomore Doug Bauman, sophomore Tim Randolph, freshman Tim Kegelman and junior Frank Krakowski started the night on a great note, finishing first in a meet record 1:31.62. The effort breaks Western Kentucky’s record of 1:31.82 set in 1999.
Notre Dame did not have to wait long for a great follow up. Junior David Moisan swam away with the 400 IM title in 3:57.62, setting yet another meet and pool record. Freshman Ted Brown finished right behind him in 4:00.10, followed by sophomore Jamie Lutkus (4:00.48), freshman Justin Barber (4:04.51) and sophomore Patrick Davis (4:05.72). Sophomore Patrick Heffernan took seventh place to put a punctuation mark on Notre Dame’s dominance of the 400 IM.
The Irish relay teams also came through in the 800 freestyle event. Senior Matt Obringer, freshman Brian Freeman, junior Matt Bertke and Brown won easily in 6:45.44 to score more team points for Notre Dame. The “B” team of Chris Barnes, David Moisan, Chris Zeches and Louis Cavadini took third in 6:51.81.
In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Doug Bauman finished second in 50.33, followed by freshman Alan Carter in 59.89.
