Ueland And Casey Named Academic All-Americans

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame men’s soccer standouts Thomas Ueland and Jack Casey have been named to 2018 Academic All-America® teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Ueland was a first-team selection, while Casey was named to the second team for the second straight season.

Notre Dame is the only program in the country with multiple selections to the top two teams in 2018.

The Irish duo brings Notre Dame’s men’s soccer total to 18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors since 1995. Ueland is the eighth first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection for the program all-time, and the sixth Irish player on the top team in the last six seasons.

The Irish have placed multiple student-athletes on the one of the three teams in five of the last six years. With multiple selections, Casey becomes just the third Irish player to earn the honor two or more times, joining former standouts Patrick Hodan and Harrison Shipp.

Ueland (Lexington, Kentucky) has appeared in 75 matches at forward for Notre Dame over his career. He has bagged 14 goals and added four assists to total 32 points, chipping in five game-winning goals during his Irish tenure. Ueland is tied for the team lead in goals with six (two game-winning goals) and has dished out an assist. He was named to the 2018 All-ACC Second Team in recognition of his strong play.

Ueland has maintained a 3.95 GPA as a biological sciences major, and has been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of his previous three seasons (2015, 2016 and 2017).

Casey (Morristown, New Jersey) has competed in 58 games over three seasons in the Irish midfield. He has scored one goal and added 11 assists.

Casey has earned Academic All-America Second Team honors for the second straight season. The junior has a GPA of 3.96 while double majoring in economics and political science, and is a three-time Dean’s List recipient. He was also named to the 2016 and 2017 ACC Academic Honor Roll as part of his outstanding academic achievement.

With the two selections the University of Notre Dame now has 260 Academic All-America selections, spanning from 1952 to 2018.
