Men's Golf In Fifth After First Round Of The Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational

WATERVILLE, Ireland — The Notre Dame men’s golf team shot a 16-over par 304 in the opening round of the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational on Thursday at the Waterville Golf Links.

The six-team tournament, which is being hosted by Notre Dame and the Waterville Golf Links, includes three Irish Universities and three NCAA programs.

Maynooth University (289, +1) leads after one round of play, followed by UNC Wilmington (296, +8), Texas A&M (298, +10), Ulster University (300, +12), Notre Dame (304, +21) and the University College Dublin (309, +21).

Texas A&M’s Max Miller shot a five-under par 67 to lead the field of 40 golfers by five strokes heading into Friday’s second round.

Freshmen Ben Albin and Miguel Delgado led Notre Dame’s starting five by carding 3-over par 75’s. Delgado’s day was highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 13th hole.

Juniors Matthew Rushton and Blake Barens also scored for the Irish by shooting 5-over par 77’s.

Rounding out the starting five, freshman Kevin Conners shot a 14-over par 86.

Notre Dame also had four golfers compete as individuals, including sophomore Thomas Steve, who shot a three-over par 75.

Junior Liam Cox carded a four-over par 76, while senior Zach Toste turned in a seven-over par 79. Sophomore Jens Verhey shot an opening round, 11-over par 83.

The second and third rounds of the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational will take place on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24.
