IRISH TO FACE JACKSONVILLE IN FINAL PRE-CHRISTMAS CLASH

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (8-3) caps its pre-Christmas schedule with a Thursday evening matchup with Jacksonville (7-5) in Purcell Pavilion.

NOTRE DAME VERSUS JACKSONVILLE

  • The Irish and Dolphins will be meeting for the first time Thursday evening.
  • Located in Jacksonville, Florida, the Dolphins are a member of the Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Conference. They finished 15-18 in 2017-18 and 8-6 in the ASUN.
  • Jacksonville head coach Tony Jasick was named the Hugh Durham Coach of the Year bo CollegeInsider.com as the top Division I Mid-Major coach in college basketball while at IPFW in 2014.
  • Mike Brey is 1-0 all-time against Tony Jasick, as the Irish defeated Fort Wayne (then known as IPFW) 74-62 on December 17, 2012.
  • Notre Dame is 7-0 all-time against teams from the ASUN and 6-0 in the Mike Brey era.
  • Jacksonville is the first ASUN team to make the trip to Purcell Pavilion since Stetson in 2013.

2018-19 SCHEDULE BRINGS FOUR FIRST-TIME OPPONENTS

Notre Dame’s 2018-19 non-conference schedule will feature four match ups with teams the program has never faced before. UIC (W, 84-67) and Radford (L, 60-63) visited Purcell Pavilion during the 2018 Gotham Classic, the Irish played on Oklahoma (L, 80-85) in the Jimmy V Classic in Madison Square Garden and Jacksonville will make a holiday visit to Notre Dame Thursday evening.

Mike Brey is 45-5 (.938) at Notre Dame in games featuring first-time program meetings. He also is 130-39 (.778) against all first-time opponents at Notre Dame.

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently stands second in the ACC in rebounding (9.6 per game) and leads the league in double-doubles (six in 11 games played).

Close to averaging a double-double this season (12.5 ppg, 9.6 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

DURHAM SHOT BLOCKING MAKES EARLY IMPRESSION

Even though Juwan Durham is listed as a junior on the Notre Dame roster, he is really just experiencing the first significant minutes in a series of collegiate games this season. Durham saw limited minutes in his freshman season at UConn (2016-17) after sitting out his senior year of high school to recover from an ACL tear in his right knee. He also had wrist surgery while sitting out during his transfer season last year with the Irish.

In his first game in a Notre Dame uniform against UIC (11/6/18) he became the first Notre Dame player since 2012 to block six shots in a game. Durham also sparked the Irish with 10 points and five blocks in the second half of a victory over Illinois (11/27/18) and has 28 blocks in his first 10 games (has one DNP-CD this year) at Notre Dame.

During the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present) only six other players have blocked five or more shots multiple times, putting the Tampa, Florida, native – with two full years of eligibility remaining after this season – among some notetworthy Irish players early in his career.
