IRISH RETURN TO PURCELL PAVILION TO FACE BINGHAMTON

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (7-3) returns to Purcell Pavilion for the first home game in 21 days as the Irish play host to Binghamton (3-8) in the first of two pre-Christmas home games this week.

NOTRE DAME VERSUS BINGHAMTON

  • The Irish and Bearcats will be meeting for just the second time, with Notre Dame claiming an 82-39 victory on November 14, 2014.
  • The defensive effort against Binghamton (39 points given up) marked just the third time in the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present) that the Irish held an opponent below 40 points in a game (33 vs. Monmouth, 11/16/07; 38 vs. Charleston Southern, 11/26/04).
  • Notre Dame is 16-0 all-time against teams from the America East Conference.

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently stands second in the ACC in rebounding (9.4 per game) and double-doubles (five in 10 games played).

Close to averaging a double-double this season (12.5 ppg, 9.4 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

DURHAM SHOT BLOCKING MAKES EARLY IMPRESSION

Even though Juwan Durham is listed as a junior on the Notre Dame roster, he is really just experiencing the first significant minutes in a series of collegiate games this season. Durham saw limited minutes in his freshman season at UConn (2016-17) after sitting out his senior year of high school to recover from an ACL tear in his right knee. He also had wrist surgery while sitting out during his transfer season last year with the Irish.

In his first game in a Notre Dame uniform against UIC (11/6/18) he became the first Notre Dame player since 2012 to block six shots in a game. Durham also sparked the Irish with 10 points and five blocks in the second half of a victory over Illinois (11/27/18) and has 24 blocks in his first nine games (has one DNP-CD this year) at Notre Dame.

During the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present) only six other players have blocked five or more shots multiple times, putting the Tampa, Florida, native – with two full years of eligibility remaining after this season – among some notetworthy Irish players early in his career.

NOTRE DAME vs. BINGHAMTON – BY THE NUMBERS

1

Junior Juwan Durham leads the ACC in blocked shots per game with a 2.65 average (24 total in 9 games played).  Durham has blocked three or more shots in five of nine games played this season.

2

Returning starters for the Irish in 2017-18 (Rex Pflueger, T.J. Gibbs), matching the 2002-03 and 2009-10 seasons for the lowest in the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present).

3

The Irish have lost three players out of the top 11 players on their roster entering the season to transfer or injury. Senior Elijah Burns left the team in November (has since announced intention to transfer to Siena), senior guard Rex Pflueger tore the ACL in his left knee against Purdue on December 15, 2018, and freshman Robby Carmody will miss the remainder of the season with a left shoulder injury – announced on December 14, 2018.

4

Sophomore D.J. Harvey has reached double figure scoring in four consecutive games and has bookmarked that run with 19-point efforts against Big Ten opponents Illinois and Purdue. Over the last four games, Harvey is averaging 15.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg.

5

Junior John Mooney leads the ACC in double-doubles (5) – no other ACC player has more than three double-doubles this season.

6

With five blocks in the victory over Illinois junior Juwan Durham became just the sixth Mike Brey-era player to block five or more shots in a game multiple times – joining a distinguished list of former Irish stars that includes current Irish assistant coach Ryan Humphrey, Jordan Cornette, Luke Harangody, Torin Francis and Bonzie Colson.

15

John Mooney scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half of last Saturday’s victory over Purdue in the Crossroads Classic. Mooney also nabbed five of his team-high seven rebounds in the second 20 minutes of the game.

17

CBS Sports Network’s “NCAA Men of March” will release its first episode of the 2018-19 season featuring Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

47.2

With a 95-70 victory over DePaul on November 24, Notre Dame began a string of five games against teams from college basketball’s ‘power’ conferences. The Irish posted an average of 47.2 points scored in the second half of each of those contests.

74.1

John Mooney has connected on three or more 3FGs in a single game five times in his career (twice hitting six 3FGs in a game). In those five games (including 3-for-3 from 3FG vs. Purdue) Mooney finished 23-for-31 from behind the arc (74.1%).

509

With 509 career wins, Mike Brey is the 11th active coach to reach that career milestone coaching at just one or two institutions.
