IRISH HEAD TO CHARLOTTE FOR ACC TOURNAMENT
The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (13-18, 3-15 ACC) begins post season competition on Tuesday, March 12, facing No. 10 seed Georgia Tech (14-17, 6-12) on ESPN at 2 p.m. ET (game time will most likely tip around 2:30 p.m. ET). The Irish will be looking for their ninth ACC Championship victory in six tournament appearances.
BY THE NUMBERS – IRISH IN CHARLOTTE
2 |
Only two players in the nation have scored 430+ points, grabbed 330+ rebounds, connected on 30+ three-point field goals and have 40+ assists – junior John Mooney and South Dakota State’s Mike Daum. |
6 |
With 348 rebounds this season – John Mooney is now sixth on the single-season rebound total list during the Mike Brey era (since 2000-01). He is just three rebounds behind Luke Harangody (351) and six behind Jack Cooley (354) to move into fourth place (see page 8 side bar for the top 10). |
7.3 |
Increase in rebounds per game for John Mooney this season (from 3.9 in 2017-18). He has also increased his scoring 8.5 points (5.6 to 14.1) and has 18 more double-doubles than last season (1). |
8 |
Notre Dame is 8-4 all-time in the ACC tournament, failing to win a tournament game just once (the team’s first season as a part of the league in 2013-14). The Irish won the 2015 ACC Championship and advanced to the 2017 ACC Championship game. |
9.4 |
John Mooney pulled down 9.4 defensive rebounds in ACC play this season – since 1996-97 only Tim Duncan (10.6 in 1996-97) has eclipsed that mark and it is a full rebound 9.4 vs. 8.4 for the next highest (Luke Maye this season, Alvin Jones from GT in 2000-01 and Sean May from UNC in 2004-05). |
12.6 |
John Mooney averaged 12.6 rebounds in conference play this season – a mark that led all major conference players – and was fourth in the country for all conference players. |
13 |
John Mooney finished with 13 double-doubles in ACC play this season – a mark surpassed by only Tim Duncan’s 15 double-doubles in league play during the 1996-97 season (see page 5 for more). |
13.9 |
Notre Dame is third in the country in fouls committed per game at 13.9 – just behind national leaders Loyola Chicago and Dayton at 13.8. The Irish are sixth in the country in turnovers per game with a 9.5 average. |
23 |
Freshman Nate Laszewski scored a career-high 23 points in the regular-season finale at Pittsburgh on Saturday, recording the first 20-point game of his career. Laszewski was six-for-nine from three point range and scored 12 consecutive points to help cut an eight-point Pitt lead with 6:56 remaining to one point with 1:14 left. |
55 |
The Irish have been struck by the injury bug this season – losing 55 games from either full-time projected starters (senior Rex Pflueger 21 games, sophomore D.J. Harvey 2 games, junior T.J. Gibbs 1 game) or players who started multiple games this season (freshman Robby Carmody 22 games, junior Nikola Djogo 4 games, junior Juwan Durham 5 games). Save for Gibbs (who missed one game with the flu), all of the players listed above will not be available for the ACC tournament. |
97 |
Due to a series of injuries, the Irish back court of junior T.J. Gibbs and freshman Prentiss Hubb have combined to play 97% of of a possible 560 minutes over the past seven games for the Irish. Gibbs (272) and Hubb (271) have combined for 543 minutes in the past seven games – while dishing out 56 assists. Hubb, as of March 10, is second in the nation for total minutes played by a major conference true freshman with 1,032. |
110 |
Four freshman – Prentiss Hubb (39), Dane Goodwin (36), Nate Laszewski (35) and Chris Doherty (4) combined for 114 minutes played against Pittsburgh on Saturday. That is the most for three true freshman in a game during the Mike Brey era. |
IRISH HAVE SHORT BUT STRONG HISTORY IN THE ACC TOURNAMENT
Notre Dame is finishing its sixth season as a member of the ACC and has already compiled a distinguished resume at the league tournament. The Irish are 8-4 all-time in the championship competition, including the 2015 title (defeating both Duke and North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina) while also advancing to the 2017 championship game against Duke.
