IRISH AND BLUE DEVILS RENEW RIVALRY ON BIG MONDAY

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (11-9, 1-6 ACC) plays host its second top-three opponent in less than 53 hours on Monday evening when No. 2/2 Duke (17-2, 6-1) enters Purcell Pavilion for a ESPN Big Monday contest. Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2013-14 season, the Notre Dame – Duke series is even at five-and-five.

The Irish are in the midst of a stretch of eight ACC games that feature five ranked teams – including three contests against top-10 ranked opponents.

MR. MOONEY ONE OF SIX MAJOR CONFERENCE PLAYERS AVERAGING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Junior forward John Mooney (dubbed Mr. Mooney by Notre Dame Basketball Radio Network Analyst Zach Hillesland) is on a run of six consecutive double-doubles that has pushed his season averages to 14.5 (ppg) and 10.8 (rpg) – the only ACC player averaging a double-double.

Mooney joins Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy (14.6 pts, 12.1 reb), Kansas’ Dedric Lawson (19.5 pts, 11.1 reb), Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ (18.9 pts, 10.4 reb), Maryland’s Bruno Fernando (14.6 pts, 10.3 reb)  and Arizona State’s Zylan Cheatham (11.8 pts, 10.4 rpg) as the only major conference players averaging a double-double in 2018-19.

Add in Mooney’s .525 field-goal percentage and the list of players averaging double-doubles and shooting over .525 from the field is trimmed to just Mooney, Happ, Cheatham and Fernando.

Add in Mooney’s .455 three-point field goal percentage – and he becomes the only major conference player to average over 10 points, 10 rebounds, .525 FG% and .455 3FG% (minimum of 30 attempts).

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently leads the ACC in rebounding (10.8 per game) and double-doubles (12 in 20 games played).

One of six major conference players averaging a double-double this season (14.5 ppg, 10.8 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

NOTRE DAME vs. DUKE SERIES HISTORY

  • Notre Dame and Duke will be meeting for the 32nd time on Monday evening, with the Blue Devils holding a 24-7 advantage in the series.
  • Since the Irish joined the ACC for the 2013-14 season, the series has become much more even, with both teams earning five victories in the 10 meetings since the 2013-14 season.
  • Mike Brey was an assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from 1987 through 1995, when the Blue Devils advanced to six Final Fours and won back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992. Brey is the only former Krzyzewski assistant to earn a victory as a head coach against Duke.
  • The Notre Dame – Duke series features match ups in the Final Four (1978), preseason NIT (1990), NCAA second round (2002), Great Alaska Shootout (1998) and the ACC Championship Game (2017).

NOTRE DAME vs. DUKE – BY THE NUMBERS

1

There is only one player in the country averaging 10-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, shooting better than .525 from the field and .450 from three-point range – Notre Dame junior John Mooney (14.5 ppg, 10.8 rpg, .525 FG%, .455 3FG%).

3.20

Junior Juwan Durham leads the ACC in blocked shots per game with a 3.20 average (48 total in 15 games played).  That number puts him third in the country entering this week’s college basketball action. Durham has missed four out of the last five games to rest an injured ankle suffered Jan. 1, 2019, at Virginia Tech. He is doubtful for Monday night’s contest.

4

Mike Brey is 4-2 at Notre Dame against teams ranked second in the Associated Press Top 25, the most recent a 80-76 victory over No. 2/1 North Carolina on Feb. 6, 2016 as an unranked team. An additional victory over No. 2/2 during Notre Dame’s ACC era was a 74-64 victory over Duke in the 2015 ACC Championship Semifinals.

5

Since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season, Notre Dame has posted five victories over Duke (5-5). Only North Carolina (5-7) has as many victories over the Blue Devils during that time period. Notre Dame and Miami (3-3) are the only two ACC teams to have a .500 or better record vs. Duke since 2013-14.

6

John Mooney is on a run of six consecutive games with a double-double, posting a 18.8 ppg and 14.2 rpg average over those six contests. Mooney has the longest streak of consecutive double-doubles of any major conference player and the second-longest streak of any NCAA Division I player (see page xx for more).

7

Mike Brey has posted 11 victories over top-five ranked teams at Notre Dame – with seven of those wins earned as an unranked team.  See page 11 for a complete list.

9.7

With a 9.7 average, Notre Dame is second in the country in turnovers committed per game after facing national-leader Virginia (8.4) on Saturday afternoon.

12

John Mooney leads the ACC and is tied for fifth in the country with 12 double-doubles (he is tied for second in double-doubles among major conference players). He also paces the ACC in 10-rebound performances with 14 this season.

13.5

Notre Dame, on average, is committing just 13.5 personal fouls per game – which leads the nation after Saturday’s college basketball action. The Irish are just ahead of Siena (13.6) and Dayton (13.8).

200

John Mooney is the latest Irish player to make a significant jump in statistical production during their junior seasons in the Notre Dame program. He is poised to become the 10th junior since the 2005-06 season to improve scoring by at least 200 points during their junior season. See page 11 for a more detailed breakdown.

975

T.J. Gibbs is just 25 points away from reaching 1,000 in his career at Notre Dame and will become the 63rd Irish player to reach that career scoring plateau. Notre Dame is tied for fifth in NCAA history for 1,000-point scorers (see page 5 for more details).

1,586

Notre Dame’s freshman class has logged 1,586 minutes of playing time this season, already the third-most for a rookie class in the Mike Brey era. See page 10 for a further freshman class breakdown.

2004

The last time Notre Dame faced back-to-back top-five opponents at home was during the 2003-04 season, when the Irish lost 66-58 to No. 4/4 Pittsburgh on Feb. 7, 2004, then defeated No. 5/5 UConn 80-74 on Feb. 9, 2004.
