IRISH TAKE ON COPPIN STATE IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME OF THE SEASON

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (9-3) ends the 2018-19 non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon against Coppin State (0-14) in Purcell Pavilion. The game will be the first in nine days for the Irish after the 100-74 victory over Jacksonville on December 20, 2019.

NOTRE DAME VERSUS COPPIN STATE

  • Notre Dame and Coppin State will be meeting for the second time on Saturday afternoon. The Irish won the initial meeting between the two schools 104-67 on November 19, 2014.
  • Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Coppin State is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
  • Coppin State head coach Juan Dixon is in his second season with the Eagles, returning to his hometown after starring at the University of Maryland and the NBA. Dixon was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 NCAA Final Four and ACC Player of the Year that season as well.
  • Notre Dame is 6-0 all-time against teams from the MEAC.
  • The Irish last faced a MEAC team in the 2018 National Invitation Tournament, posting an 84-63 victory over Hampton in Purcell Pavilion.

MOONEY LEADS ACC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently stands tied for second in the ACC in rebounding (9.4 per game) and leads the league in double-doubles (six in 12 games played).

Close to averaging a double-double this season (12.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

DURHAM SHOT BLOCKING MAKES EARLY IMPRESSION

Even though Juwan Durham is listed as a junior on the Notre Dame roster, he is really just experiencing the first significant minutes in a series of collegiate games this season. Durham saw limited minutes in his freshman season at UConn (2016-17) after sitting out his senior year of high school to recover from an ACL tear in his right knee. He also had wrist surgery while sitting out during his transfer season last year with the Irish.

In his first game in a Notre Dame uniform against UIC (11/6/18) he became the first Notre Dame player since 2012 to block six shots in a game. Durham also sparked the Irish with 10 points and five blocks in the second half of a victory over Illinois (11/27/18) and has 33 blocks in his first 11 games (has one DNP-CD this year) at Notre Dame.

During the Mike Brey era (2000-01 – present) only six other players have blocked five or more shots multiple times, putting the Tampa, Florida, native – with two full years of eligibility remaining after this season – among some notetworthy Irish players early in his career.

NOTRE DAME vs. COPPIN STATE – BY THE NUMBERS

3.0

Junior Juwan Durham leads the ACC in blocked shots per game with a 3.0 average (33 total in 11 games played).  He has blocked three or more shots in seven of 11 games played this season – including five in the last Notre Dame outing against Jacksonville.

3

Notre Dame is the only ACC team with three players among the top 10 in the league for assist/turnover ratio. Junior T.J. Gibbs is third (3.14), senior Rex Pflueger is fifth (2.69) and freshman Prentiss Hubb is eighth at 2.28. The Irish are 15th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio at 1.55.

4

Notre Dame is tied for fourth in the country in the least amount of fouls committed as the Irish are on average whistled for just 14.2 fouls per game.

5

Only five major conference teams have completed a season with a free throw percentage over .742 six or more times since the start of the Mike Brey era. Villanova (10), Arizona (9) lead the way, followed by Notre Dame, Michigan and Oregon with six seasons each. The Irish are .751 from the charity stripe this season.

6

Junior John Mooney leads the ACC in double-doubles (6) and has seven his career. Mooney also paces the ACC in 10-rebound performances with seven.

7

In the first two games without Rex Pflueger in the line up (who led the team in assists), freshman Prentiss Hubb stepped up against Binghamton and Jacksonville to dish out a career-high seven assists in each game.

8

The Irish have lost three players out of the top 11 on their roster entering the season to transfer or injury. Senior Elijah Burns left the team in November (has since announced intention to transfer to Siena), senior guard Rex Pflueger tore the ACL in his left knee against Purdue on December 15, 2018, and freshman Robby Carmody will miss the remainder of the season with a left shoulder injury – announced on December 14, 2018.

18

Notre Dame connected on 18 three-point field goals in their last outing against Jacksonville (12/20/18), threatening the school-record of 20 vs. Villanova in 2011. The 18 three pointers settle in at the fourth-best in school history, behind the Villanova game and 19 against North Carolina A&T (12/4/16) and South Dakota (12/2/08), respectively.

24

The Irish dished out a season-high 24 assists against Jacksonville, the most since the team posted 25 in the 2018 ACC Championship second round against Duke. It was the most at home since Notre Dame had 29 team assists against North Carolina A&T on December 4, 2016.

43

With 43 points in the second half against Binghamton, Notre Dame increased its run of 40-point second halves to seven games dating back to the 56-point second half against DePaul on 11/24/18. The Irish have failed to reach 40 points in the second half just three times this season (vs. UIC, Radford and Duquesne) and are averaging 43 points in the second 20 minutes of each game this season.

73.1

Since the start of the Mike Brey era (2000-01) Notre Dame is third among major-conference schools in team free throw percentage at .731. Villanova ranks first (.744), followed by Arizona (.731).

75.1

Notre Dame is shooting .751 from the free throw line this season, ranked fourth in the ACC and 37th in the NCAA. The Irish are on a four-year run of finishing the season with a team free-throw percentage of .742 or higher – including a team-record, ACC-record and NCAA-high .800 in 2016-17.

511

With 511 career wins, Mike Brey is the 11th active coach to reach 500 wins coaching at just one or two institutions.
