IRISH CONTINUE ACC ROAD SWING AT MIAMI 

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (12-10, 2-7 ACC) continues its two-game Atlantic Coast Conference road swing Wednesday evening at Miami (9-12, 1-8) on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. ET.  An advantage in the series is up for grabs, as each team has earned 11 victories (and five home-court victories) in the 22 previous meetings between the Irish and Hurricanes. 

NOTRE DAME vs. MIAMI SERIES HISTORY

  • Notre Dame and Miami will be meeting for the 23rd time on Wendesday evening with the all-time series even at 11-11. 
  • Miami holds a 4-3 advantage in the ACC series, including a 77-74 win over a depleted Irish team last season (Bonzie Colson missed the game, along with Rex Pflueger). 
  • The series is even in Miami (5-5) with the record also even (2-2) at the Watsco Center. 
  • Notre Dame freshman Prentiss Hubb and Miami sophomore Chris Lykes were high school teammates at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. The duo helped lead the Eagles to the 2017 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title while scoring 843 combined points with 112 assists.

Junior forward John Mooney (dubbed Mr. Mooney by Notre Dame Basketball Radio Network Analyst Zach Hillesland) is on a run of eight consecutive double-doubles that has pushed his season averages to 14.5 (ppg) and 10.9 (rpg) – the only ACC player averaging a double-double.

Junior forward John Mooney has raised his level of play to an all-conference level in 2018-19 and currently leads the ACC in rebounding (10.9 per game) and double-doubles (14 in 22 games played). 

One of six major conference players averaging a double-double this season (14.5 ppg, 10.9 rpg), Mooney entered the season with 4.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg averages.

John Mooney is on a run of eight consecutive games with a double-double, posting a 17.5 ppg and 13.6 rpg averages over those eight contests. Mooney has the longest streak of consecutive double-doubles in the ACC, longest for any major conference player and the second-longest streak of any NCAA Division I player (see page 3 for more).

The Irish have won 90% (.904, 350-37) of their games when they shoot a better percentage from the field than their opponents under Mike Brey. Points scored at Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C., by Notre Dame freshman Prentiss Hubb (339) and Miami sophomore Chris Lykes (504) during the 2016-17 prep season, leading the Eagles to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title. Hubb was sidelined for his senior season at Gonzaga with an ACL injury. The two also combined for 112 assists (Hubb 53, Lykes 59) during that championship year.
