Men Swimmers Move Up To Second At BIG EAST Meet

Long Island, N.Y. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team moved up to second place after day two of the 2000 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships in Long Island, N.Y. The Irish have 360 points and trail Pittsburgh, who is in first with 541 points. Rutgers (318), Syracuse (271) and Miami (240) round out the top five.

Senior Ray Fitzpatrick earned his first BIG EAST individual title, winning the 200 fresstyle in a time of 1:38.36. Fitzpatrick’s time broke his own school record of 1:38.83 and was a provisional qualifier for the 2000 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Yesterday, Fitzpatrick tied his own school record in the 50 freestyle, placing fifth.

Fitzpatrick also anchored the 200 medley relay team of Brian Skorney, Mike Koss and Brendan Lechner that placed second, and the 800 freestyle relay that placed third. The 200 medley relay team broke the school record with a time of 1:32.23, breaking the previous record of 1:32.24 set by Skorney, Steele Whowell, Lechner and Vince Kuna last season.

Senior diver Herb Huesman continued his comeback from injury placing fourth in the three-meter diving competition. Huesman missed the entire 1999 season after having a tumor removed from his rib cage. Freshman Andy Maggio was fifth and Tony Xie was 13th in three-meter diving.

Junior Ryan Verlin placed fourth in the 400 individual medley, while sophomore Mike Koss and junior Dan Szilier tied for fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57:09. Skorney was also fifth in the 100 backstroke in 50.54, breaking his own school record of 50.76 set last season.

The 2000 BIG EAST Championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
