NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s track and field team finished second at the 21st annual BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. It is the fourth straight time the Irish have been the runner-up, and the third year in a row they finished behind Georgetown for the team title. The women’s team, which sat in first place after the first day of action on Saturday, fell to sixth in the final team standings.
The men were led by senior sprinter Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) who won his first two BIG EAST indoor titles in the 60 and 400 meter dashes. Cochran’s 60 meter time was 6.79, a new BIG EAST meet record, and his time in the 400, 47.76, was the fourth-best in the conference this season. Senior Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.), coming off his victory in the long jump on Saturday, finished second in the 200 meter dash in 21.52, just behind Adrian Woodley of Syracuse.
Other top finishers on the men’s side were sophomore Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.), third in the men’s mile (4:11.59), and senior Phil Mishka (Toledo, Ohio), second in the 1,000 meters in 2:22.22, which is a new school record time.
For the women’s team, sophomore sprinter Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) won the 400 meter dash in 55.27 for her first BIG EAST individual title. The 4X400 meter relay team of Grow, Carri Lenz (London, Ont.), Amanda Alvarez (Ogden, Utah), and Kymia Love (Memphis, Tenn.)finished in 3:45.29 – a new school record time and good enough for fourth place in the finals.
The Irish will continue the season in the last home meet, the Alex Wilson Invitational, which takes place March 3-4.
