NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s track and field team placed 34th out of 47 teams at the ICAAAA Track and Field Championships at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., May 22-23.

Junior Marshaun West was the only Irish athlete to place within the top eight after finishing third in the long jump with a season-best leap of 24-11 1/4 to give the Irish six points for the competition. Sophomore distance runner Ryan Shay was Notre Dame’s next highest finisher after placing ninth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:44.28. Freshmen Luke Watson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (15th – 9:10.71) and Marc Striowski in the 10,000 meters (21st – 32:12.61) also reached the finals in their respective events.

Others competing in the preliminaries for the Irish included Chris Cochran in the 400 meters (47.79), Phil Mishka in the 800 meters (1:49.50), Antonio Arce in the 1,500 meters (3:48.46), Derek Dyer in the discus (142-2) and Jay Hofner in the hammer throw (159-9).

Selected members of the Notre Dame men’s track and field team will be back in action at the NCAA championships in two weeks. Bids for the championships will be announced May 27.
