Men's Tennis Squad Rounds Out Third Day Of USTA/ITA Regional Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team competed in the third day of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Sat., Oct. 23 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind. At the completion of the day, junior Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) took home a 6-1, 6-3 win over teammate, sophomore Michael Moore (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) defeated Marquette’s Jose Munoz 6-1, 6-0 in his first match before taking on Evan King of Michigan. In what was perhaps the best match of the day, Stahl dropped a three set decision to King, 1-6, 6-7, 3-6. “Stahl’s match was the best of the day,” says head coach Bobby Bayliss. “While it was disappointing that Dan lost, it’s good to know that all of his hard work is paying off.”

Both Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) and Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hill Christian) earned victories in their first matches of the day, sending them to qualifying matches for the main draw quarterfinals. Andrews recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory over DePaul’s Sven Kasper prior to being defeated by Blaz Rola of Ohio State. Havens downed Shaun Bernstein of the University of Michigan 6-3, 6-2 before dropping a two set decision to Ohio State’s, Matt Allare.

Starting off doubles play, Watt and David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) downed Michigan’s duo of Alex Buzzi and Duncan Muil, 8-4. Also posting doubles wins for the Irish were Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra), recording a solid 8-2 victory against Toledo’s Knot Likitkumchorn and Leo Sarria.

Havens and Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) won 8-3 over Ohio State’s Nelson Vick and Steven Williams.
