EAST LANSING, Mich. — Notre Dame junior All-American men’s tennis player Ryan Sachire won a pair of straight-set matches to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Region IV Championship at Michigan State on Saturday. Sachire, the top seed in the 96-player draw and ranked eighth in the country, beat Indiana’s Tari Arons 6-3, 6-3 and Iowa’s 10th-seeded Tyler Cleveland 6-1, 6-2.
Sachire will play Minnesota’s unseeded Tyson Parry, who upset Wisconsin’s seventh-seeded Mark Loughrin on Saturday. Loughrin had eliminated Irish sophomore Matt Daly 6-1, 7-6 (6) in his first match of the day.
Butler’s Shlomo Shemesh upset Notre Dame senior and 13th-seed Brian Patterson 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Minnesota’s Jon Svenson defeated Irish freshman Andrew Laflin 7-5, 6-1.
In the doubles competition, Daly and freshman Casey Smith fell to the ninth-seeded team of Martin Bengtsson and Doug Bohaboy 8-1. Fourth-seeded Patterson and Sachire beat Northern Illinois’ Mattias Ardvelt and Augusto Cantone 8-2 in the second round before falling to Michigan State’s 12th-seeded Ken Kigongo and Tim Trinidad 8-6.
