Men's Tennis Concludes Play At William & Mary And Alabama

WILLIAMSBURG, Va./TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team concluded its first day of the Tribe Invitational at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va. and the Alabama Invitational at the Alabama Tennis Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Friday (Nov. 5). The Irish combined 17 singles and three doubles wins on the day between the two tournaments.

Earning two singles wins at the William & Mary Invitational were senior Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Hill Christian), junior Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College), sophomore Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) and freshman Billy Pecor (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral).

Havens downed Lukas Koncilia of College of Charleston and John Collins of Maryland, both in two-set matches, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Fitzgerald earned 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1 victories over Kyle Parker of College of Charleston and Jan Surovic of Maryland. Mickael Boyer of College of Charleston and Michiel Doornenbal of Maryland both fell to Talmadge 6-4, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-1, in that order. Pecor handled College of Charleston’s Mickael Trintignac 6-3 and 6-0 and Sergio Wyss of Maryland 6-4, 6-4.

At the Alabama Invitational senior Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) handled Stillman’s Joshua Irazabal in a two-set match (6-0, 6-0), before battling back and eventually defeating Adam Lawton of Virginia Tech in a three-set match (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).

Senior Bryan Kelly (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) battled Chattanooga’s Matt Harris to earn a victory in a three-sets (2-6, 7-6, 6-2)

Matt Dooley (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) captured two wins on the day, both in three-set matches. The freshman defeated Brian Locklear or Boston College and Leonard Lapentti of Virginia Tech.

Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) and senior captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) and freshman Ryan Bandy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and senior Sean Tan (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) earned doubles victories on the day. Andrews and Davis won 9-7 over Mario Rolemberg and Anas Roychdi of Troy, 9-7. Bandy and Tan defeated Tulane’s Idan Mark and Joe Young 8-5.
