May 7, 2004

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Tim Welsh has signed a contract extension to continue as head men’s swimming coach at Notre Dame.

Welsh just completed his 19th year leading the Irish men’s swimming and diving program and his 27th overall as a collegiate head coach. Also the head coach of the University’s women’s swimming and diving team from 1985-95, he has helped the Notre Dame men to a 159-90 (.639) dual-meet record and holds a 224-126 (.640) career mark.

Welsh’s teams have won 24 conference titles, including 15 at Notre Dame. In addition, the Irish have finished second in the BIG EAST Championships on three occasions, including in 2004, when they posted their highest point total ever at the meet. Welsh has seen 18 of his teams win nine or more dual meets in a season, while eight times his Irish squads have finished among the top 10 in the nation in team grade-point average.

Twice tabbed BIG EAST Coach of the Year over the last five seasons (1999 and 2004), Welsh has had his Irish student-athletes earn All-America honors three times, gain 11 berths to the NCAA Championships, and win six individual BIG EAST titles. In addition, they have set more than 200 University records, including in every men’s and women’s event multiple times.

Welsh, a 1966 graduate of Providence College, was previously head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams at Johns Hopkins from 1977-84, leading the Blue Jays to NCAA Division III titles in 1978 and ’79 on the men’s side. He was named the National Coach of the Year in ’79 for his efforts.
