Men's Swimming And Diving Sweeps Cleveland State, Niagara

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team got back on track by defeating both Cleveland State (143-98) and Niagara (138-71) in dual-meet action Saturday afternoon at Cleveland State’s Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. With the two wins, the Irish improved to 3-4 overall in 1999-2000.

Against Cleveland State, Notre Dame got event wins in the 400 medley relay, the 200 individual medley, the 200 butterfly, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke and both the one and three-meter diving events. Irish senior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio) was a double-event winner on both the one (310.05) and three-meter (339.70) boards with NCAA zone meet qualifying scores. Freshman diver Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio) also posted zone meet qualifying scores of 296.60 (one-meter) and 316.75 (three-meter) after placing second to Huesman in both diving events.

Notre Dame won the first nine events of the meet versus Niagara before exhibitioning all of its swimmers in the final three events. Senior Rob Fetter (Lakeland, Fla.) posted first-place finishes as the anchor leg in the 400 medley relay (3:30.09) and in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.49. Notre Dame swimmers Sean Casey (1000 freestyle), Ray Fitzpatrick (200 freestyle), Clay Miller (200 individual medley), Austin Anderson (100 freestyle) and Jason Colettis (200 backstroke) also picked up individual wins against the Purple Eagles.

The Irish will be back in action at the Bill Ritter Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, January 21-22. Last season, the Irish won the Bill Ritter Invitational, placing first in the six-team field.
