The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team fell to 4-4 on the season after suffering a 181-116 loss at Pennsylvania on Friday evening. The host Quakers walked away with 12 of 13 event victories to begin the meet and post a comfortable lead over the visiting Irish. The meet with Penn is the first of two dual meets for the Irish this weekend, as Notre Dame will take on BIG EAST rivals Villanova and Pittsburgh on Saturday.

The night began with the 200 medley relay and the top Irish team of Doug Bauman, Jason Fitzpatrick, Frank Krakowski and Tim Randolph ended up second in 1:36.16. Unfortunately for the Irish, they would have to wait until event eight to break through for a victory. Matt Obringer came through in the 100 freestyle, touching first in 48.19.

Over in the diving well, however, the senior triumvirate of Andy Maggio, Tong Xie and Joe Miller dominated to provide the highlights for Notre Dame. Maggio won both the one- and three-meter events, scoring 295.28 points in one meter and 287.40 in three meter. Xie finished second in one meter and third in three meter, while Miller was fifth in one meter and second in three meter. In all, the Notre Dame divers score 30 of the team’s 116 points.

Other notable performances for the Irish included Obringer finishing second in the 200 freestyle (1:43.36), Bauman second in the 100 back (52.67), Randolph second in the 100 breast (59.25), Krakowski second in the 50 free (21.70) and 100 fly (51.55), Tyler Grenda second in the 200 breast (2:09.06), J.R. Teddy second in the 500 free (4:40.64) and David Moisan taking second in the 200 IM (1:57.66).
