Notre Dame, Ind. – The BIG EAST runner-up men’s swimming squad signed two swimmers, T.J. Durkin (Dracut, Mass.) and Clay Miller (Mead, Wash.), and a diver, Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio), during the spring signing period.

Durkin attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and will help bolster the Irish in the backstroke. The 1999 Speedo Junior National champion in the 100 backstroke, Durkin is a 1998 honorable mention All-American in both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle and swims for the New Wave Club in Lowell, Mass. He also was the winner of the 1999 Wilmot S. Babcock Award, given to a New England prep school swimmer for outstanding athletic achievement and sportsmanship.

Miller is Notre Dame’s third men’s swimmer from the state of Washington. A recent graduate of Mt. Spokane High School in Mead, Wash., he has qualified for this year’s junior nationals in six events including the 200 and 400 individual medley, the 100 and 200 butterfly, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle.

Maggio excelled in both academics and athletics at St. Xavier High School. A National Merit Scholar, Maggio is a four-time All-American and placed in the top three at the Ohio state meet all four years. He also earned distinction as a Notre Dame Scholar and will be a member of the freshmen honors program.
