Men's Swimming And Diving Increases Lead At ND Invitational

Dec. 3, 2004

Results

The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming team continued its dominating performance at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday evening, winning five events and strengthening its lead in the competition. The Irish have 1,784 points, close to 1,000 points more than their closest competitor, BIG EAST opponent West Virginia in second place (798).

Notre Dame was led by sophomore Tim Kegelman on Friday once again, as he set another pool and meet record in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 48.11 – an NCAA “B” qualification. Teammate senior Frank Krakowski was third in 49.47, while sophomore Louis Cavadini ended up fourth in 49.68. Kegelman also posted an NCAA “B” time in the 200 IM on Thursday (NCAA “B” times are possible championship meet qualification times, depending on how many swimmers make the “A”, or automatic, qualification).

The Irish began the evening with a solid victory in the 200 medley relay, with junior Doug Bauman, junior Tim Randolph, Kegelman and Krakowski taking home a victory in 1:31.91 – the second consecutive ND Invitational victory for that relay team.

Other winners for Notre Dame on the evening included Randolph in the 100 breaststroke (57.37 – a season best time), Bauman in the 100 backstroke (50.11, a season best) and the 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Ted Brown, senior Matt Bertke, junior Patrick O’Berry and sophomore Brian Freeman, finishing in 6:44.52.

The meet will wrap up tomorrow with the preliminaries at 10:00 a.m. followed by the finals at 6:30 p.m. in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
