PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Simon Forster’s goal 11:54 into the first overtime session lifted the host Rutgers to a 1-0 decision to 16th-ranked Notre Dame. The loss was the first setback of the season for the Irish who fell to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Forster’s goal came off an assist from David Boutilier who passed found Forster in the right corner of the box.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Scarlet Knights against the Irish. The contest also marked the fourth straight game the two teams have battled to a 1-0 decision with each team winning twice. In the 1996 regular season meeting between the two schools, Rutgers prevailed at home, only two have the Irish return the favor that same year in the BIG EAST championship finale in Piscataway, N.J. Last season, Notre Dame the 1-0 win at Alumni Field.

Rutgers, which improved to 2-2-1 and 2-0-0 in league play, outshot the Irish 13-4. Notre Dame freshman Shane Walton (San Diego, Calif.), the team’s leading scorer with five goals and three assists, was held scoreless for the first time this season. Heading into the contest, the rookie forward had scored a goal in all four games. He was held to just three shots on the night. Matt McNew (Arlington, Tex.) was the only other player to get off a shot.

Senior goalkeeper Greg Velho (Longwood, Fla.) came up with seven saves in the contest.
