Men's Soccer Shuts Out Cleveland State, 1-0

Sept. 14, 1999

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Ryan Cox (Broadview Heights, Ohio) scored his first goal of the 1999 season at the 37:26 mark of the first half to lift the Notre Dame men’s soccer team to its third shutout of the season as the Irish beat visiting Cleveland State. The non-conference matchup for both teams was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Cox scored the game-winner when he kicked in Alan Lyskawa’s (Novi, Mich.) ball that rebounded off the post. Lskyawa’s attempt came from the left corner of the box that was fed from the right corner of the box from Dustin Pridmore (Dallas, Texas). With the win, Notre Dame improves to 3-1-1 on the season. The victory also leaves 10th-year Irish head coach Mike Berticelli just one win shy of his 100th at Notre Dame.

Berticelli’s squad, which had gone 0-1-1 in its last two outings thoroughly dominated the contest as it outshot the Vikings 22-2 in the game. Notre Dame did not allow a shot in the first half. The Irish also owned an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Viking goalie Geoff Mauch made seven stops in the game as Cleveland State fell to 2-3 on the season.

Notre Dame returns to action on Friday, September 17 when the Irish travel to BIG EAST rival Seton Hall for a 3:00 p.m. contest. That game is the beginning of four straight road games Berticelli’s team. Also on the slate this weekend is a matchup with 19th-ranked Connecticut on Sunday, September 19 in Storrs, Conn.
