Men's Soccer Contest Ends In A Draw

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Freshmen Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) and Paul Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) each scored goal in Notre Dame’s 2-2 at Valparaiso. The game was halted at the 117:31 mark of the contest because of darkness.

The tie is the first-ever in the series between the Irish and the Crusaders. Heading into the matchup, Notre Dame had won the previous 26 meetings between the two schools.

Scott Daly scored two goals for Valparaiso, including the game-tying score with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. Daly combined with J.J. Ruane for both of his team’s scores.

Valparaiso, which had been outscored 32-2 in its last seven meetings, got on the scoreboard with Daly’s first goal at 5:26 off Ruane’s feed.

Notre Dame countered with two goals in less than a minute. Braun tallied his eighth goal of the season on an unassisted goal at 15:36 and then dished off the assist Rodriguez who scored his first collegiate goal at the 16:35 mark. Braun has had either a goal or an assist in Notre Dame’s last five games.

Notre Dame dominated the first as it outshot the Crusaders 10-3 and finished the contest with a 15-7 shot advantage. The Irish also attempted 17 corner kicks, compared to just three for Valparaiso.

Notre Dame had three shot attempts in overtime and Valparaiso had just one attempt before the game was halted because of darkness in the second overtime session.

Ken Kirleis had a strong game in goal for Valparaiso as he came up with 10 saves. Irish goalkeeper Gerick Short (Mobile, Ala.) had three stops.

The Irish, unbeaten in its last five games and winners of four straight heading into the contest, are now 7-4-2 overall on the season, while Valparaiso is 2-8-1.

Notre Dame plays two BIG EAST games this weekend beginning with Villanova on Friday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field.
