Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s golf coach George Thomas announced today that Kevin Wiseman (South Bend, Ind.), Steven Colnitis (Baldwin, Md.) and Ryan Marshall (Marco Island, Fla.) have signed national letters-of-intent to attend the University of Notre Dame beginning in the fall of 2001.

The three new golfers bring outstanding golf credentials to Notre Dame and will fill the void left due to the graduation of seniors, Alex Kent (Lambare, Paraguay), Pat Schaffler (Dallas, Tex.) and Adam Anderson (Plankinton, S.D.).

“All three golfers are outstanding student-athletes with excellent junior golf experience. All three have the ability to have an impact on the Notre Dame golf program next season,” says Thomas.

Wiseman, currently a senior at South Bend’s Riley High School, leads the list of incoming student-athletes. A scratch golfer, Wiseman is in the midst of a strong spring season at Riley where he has also played soccer and basketball. A Lilly Grant recipient, he finished third in last year’s Indiana State High School Championship with rounds of 73 and 75 after tying for first in the sectionals and second in the regionals. A first team All-State selection last year, Wiseman is a three-time All-Conference selection for the Northern Indiana Conference. Ranked first in his class at Riley, Wiseman plans on a pre-med major at Notre Dame.

“Signing K.C. to a national letter-of-intent is exactly the kind of student and competitor that Notre Dame is looking for. Along with receiving the Lilly Grant for outstanding grades, K.C. is an outstanding all-around athlete. He is a top prospect for the Notre Dame golf program,” says Thomas.

Colnitis is finishing his senior season at St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, Md., where he finished fourth in the Maryland Private School Championships in 2000. He followed that with a fourth place finish last summer at the Maryland State Junior Championships. Colnitis has played in a variety of American Junior Golf Association events on the local, state and national level including the Western Junior (15th of 156) and the AJGA Hartford Classic (21st of 78). A 1998 Maryland State Junior Champion and Middle Atlantic Junior Champion, Colnitis has a one-handicap.

“Steve has played well throughout his career at many of the major junior events. He is a strong player who is expected to make an impact on the varsity squad this season,” says Thomas.

Marshall is a veteran of junior golf play on both the national and international level winning two tournaments last season on the International Junior Golf Tour along with one on the Florida Junior Golf Tour while turning in a 73.8 average in these national events. A senior at St. John Neumann High School in Naples, Fla., Marshall took All-State honors after finishing sixth at the Florida State Championships with rounds of 73-77 last year. In 1998, he was a member of the four-man U.S. World Junior Golf Cup team that captured the World Junior Cup at St. Andrew’s, Scotland.

“Ryan is a top recruit with considerable junior golf experience against high-level competition. He is an outstanding student who has all the skills to be an outstanding collegiate golfer. I expect him to be able to come in and compete for one of the top five spots on our team this fall,” says Thomas.
