NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team wrapped up play on Sunday at the 2004 Notre Dame Invitational & Central Regional Preview with a sixth-place finish in the 15-team field. The Irish carded a final-round score of 14-over par 294, their best of the weekend, and wound up at 892 (+52) for the tournament, which was contested at the par-70, 7,011-yard Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus.

Kent State claimed the tournament championship with a three-day score of 871 (+31), two strokes better than Michigan State, which posted the best team round of the weekend with a one-over par 281 on Sunday. Texas Tech (888), Colorado (889) and Indiana (890) rounded out the top five. Kent State’s Ryan Yip took home medalist honors with a one-under par 209 (68-72-69), besting Indiana’s Jeff Overton and Michigan State’s Andrew Ruthkoski by five strokes. Overton fired the best individual round of the tournament on Sunday morning, carding a four-under par 66.

Notre Dame was led by sophomore Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian), who finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at six-over par 216 (72-76-68). Isban also registered the best round of his young collegiate career on Sunday with a two-under par 68, taking advantage of ideal course and weather conditions. In fact, much of the field was at its sharpest during the final round, with 12 teams breaking 300 and 12 players shooting par or better on Sunday.

Irish junior Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) finished tied for 12th place at 10-over par 220 (73-72-75), posting his second consecutive top-20 finish to begin the season. Meanwhile, freshmen Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s) and Mike King (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) ended up in a 37th-place tie as each shot an 18-over par 228. Sophomore Shane Sigsbee (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) turned in his best round of the tournament on Sunday, shooting a 78 to place 72nd overall at 29-over par 239.

Five other Notre Dame players took part in this weekend’s tournament as unattached competitors. Junior Tommy Balderston (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrews) tied for 23rd place at 14-over par 224 (74-77-73), while classmates Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) and Daniel Klauer (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) shared 42nd-place honors at 20-over par 230. Senior co-captain K.C. Wiseman (South Bend, Ind./Riley) fired a final-round 76, his best score since the May 2003 Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational, and finished in a 65th-place deadlock at 26-over par 236. Senior co-captain Steve Colnitis (Baldwin, Md./St. Paul’s) struggled on Sunday and ended up in 76th position at 33-over par 243 (82-76-85).

Notre Dame will take the next two weeks off before returning to the links Oct. 4-5 for the Windon Memorial Classic, which will be hosted by Northwestern in Lake Forest, Ill., at the Conway Farms Golf Club.
