Men's Cross Country Places Second At Regionals To Advance To NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The #8 Notre Dame men’s cross country team, behind the second-place finish of junior Ryan Shay, placed second today at the 1999 NCAA Great Lakes Regional cross country meet in Terre Haute, Ind. With the second-place finish, the men’s team automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships Monday, November 22, in Bloomington, Ind.

The Irish had five runners place in the top 25 to finish with 68 points. Wisconsin won the meet with 51 points, while Michigan (79), Ohio State (137) and Butler (172) rounded out the top five.

Shay, the 1999 BIG EAST champion, finished the race in a time of 30:08.10, trailing only Wisconsin senior John Schoenfelder, who won the individual title with a winning time of 30:07.00. Last season, Shay placed 10th at the region meet.

Notre Dame had five runners earn All-Great Lakes region honors including Shay, sophomore Luke Watson, who was 12th with a time of 30:50.50, senior Ryan Maxwell (16th at 31:05.20), senior Sean McManus (17th at 31:12.50) and sophomore Marc Striowski (21st in 31:18.60). It was the second all-region citation for Shay and the first for the other four runners.

The Notre Dame women, competing without top runner Joanna Deeter, placed fourth in the team championship with 224 points. Wisconsin claimed the team title with 30 points, followed by Michigan State at 110 points and Michigan with 112 points. Wisconsin and Michigan State receive automatic bids to the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championships, while Michigan and Notre Dame will find out Monday if they will receive an at-large invitation to the NCAA meet.

The Irish were led by senior Alison Klemmer who finished sixth with a time of 17:22.90. Klemmer earned all-region honors for the third time in her career, and by finishing in the top 10, automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships on November 22. Wisconsin’s Erica Palmer was first with a time of 16:52.20.

Notre Dame senior Nicole LaSelle was the Irish’s second finisher in 51st place in a time of 18:19.60. Senior Patty Rice was 53rd in a time of 18:21.60, while freshman Jennifer Handley finished 58th in 18:28.80.
