NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Jere (URE-ee) Macura, a 6-8, 205-pound forward from Split, Croatia, has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at the University of Notre Dame next fall and play for head coach Matt Doherty’s basketball team.

Macura has played for the Basketball Club of Split for the past four years and has been part of four Croatian national championships during his club career. Macura was his team’s most valuable player in 1996 and 97, and led the team in scoring in both those seasons.

In 1995, Macura was a member of the Croatian national team that won the 16-years- old-and-under European championship. Macura was the youngest member of that team at 15. He is currently a member of the Croatian national team for 19 year-olds and under.

During 1996, Macura traveled to Augusta, Ga., with a team of European all-stars to play a series of games against high school players from the United States. He attended the Nike camp in Paris in 1997.

Macura is the fourth player to commit to enroll at Notre Dame next season, including 6-10 center Ivan (ee-VAHN) Kartelo of Split, Croatia. The other two are: Matt Carroll, a 6-5 1/2 guard from Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham, Pa., and Mike Monserez, a 6-5 guard from Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
