Men In Second Place, Women In 10th After First Day Of BIG EAST

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the Stile Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio. The men currently sit in second place with 30 points, while the women are in 10th place (8 points). Junior Kevin Schipper (Leo, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) won the pole vault (5.25m), making it his third-straight BIG EAST pole vault title.

A Schipper has won the pole vault at the last five BIG EAST Championships. In addition to Kevin’s title Saturday, he also won both the 2010 indoor and outdoor BIG EAST pole vault titles. Kevin and his brother, Matt, a 2010 Notre Dame graduate combine for five BIG EAST pole vault titles.

Greg Davis (Peachtree, Ga./Starr’s Mill) picked up eight points and a second-place finish for the Irish in the weight throw and with a throw of 19.68m the senior earned his fourth all-BIG EAST honor.

The Irish will begin action Sunday with the men’s heptathlon at 8:30 a.m. at the Stile Athletic Field House in Akron, Ohio. There will be complete BIG EAST Indoor Championship results and a full recap at the conclusion of the meet.

Notre Dame Women’s Results:

60-meter hurdles: Nevada Sorenson finished seventh in 8.68, while Kali Watkins ran 8.90 to finish 13th. Sorenson advanced to the finals on Sunday.

60-meter dash: Aijah Urssery finished in 19th place in 7.80.

500-meter dash: Natalie Johnson ran 1:14.99 for a ninth-place finish, while Megan Yanik finished in 1:16.49 for 15th place. Johnson qualified for the 500-meter dash finals on Sunday.

400-meter dash: Michelle Brown ran 56.73 for a 10th-place finish, followed by Jaclyn Winkel in 14th place (57.34).

Mile: Alexa Aragon was the third-place finisher in 5:01.11, followed by Rebecca Tracy and Marissa Treece in 10th (5:05.77) and 11th (5:08.10), in that order. All three will compete in the finals Sunday.

200-meter dash: Aijah Urssery ran 25.22 to finish 17th.

1,000-meter run: McKinzie Schulz finished in second place in 2:53.38, while Kelly Curran finished in 2:58.38 (fifth place), both will compete in the finals Sunday.

800-meter run: Abby Higgins ran 2:11.81 for eighth place and advanced to the finals on Sunday. Allison Schroeder and Angela Ryck finished in 13th place (2:18.02) and 14th place (2:19.15), in that order.

5,000-meter run: Rachel Velarde was the eighth-place finisher (16:36.87) and scored one point for the Irish, while Molly Hirt and Erica Watson finished 13th (17:18.76) and 17:20.81, respectively.

Weight Throw: Madeline Casanova finished in 10th place (16.42m), followed by Mason Bashaw in 11th place (16.09m).

Long Jump: Jasmine Williams jumped 5.61 for seventh place and earned two points for the Irish.

Distance Medley Relay: Notre Dame finished in fourth place in 11:37.80 and scored five points.

Men’s Results:

Heptathlon (60-meter dash): Justin Schneider finished in fourth place in 7.36, followed by Alex Bavis in seventh place (7.41) and Dean Odegard in eighth place (7.51).

(H) Long Jump: Schneider moved into third place, jumping 6.69m. Bavis jumped 6.16m for seventh place and Odegard was the 10th-place finisher (6.13m).

(H) Shot Put: Schneider dropped to fourth place, throwing 12.16m in the shot put. Odegard moved to eighth place (10.99m) and Bavis dropped to ninth place (10.27m).

(H) High Jump: Schneider finished the day in fourth place, jumping 1.87m. Odegard is in seventh place and high jumped 1.96m, while Bavis jumped 1.90m for eighth place.

(H) Totals: Schneider is in fourth place and has 2, 803 points, Dean Odegard in in seventh place with 2, 637 points and Bavis is in eighth place with 2, 579 points.

60-meter hurdles: Jarrod Buchanon was the eighth-place finisher in 8.34 and advanced to the 60-meter hurdle finals on Sunday.

500-meter dash: Mitch Lorenz finished in ninth place (1:03.83) and Matthew Brown was the 14th-place finisher in 1:06.51 Lorenz will compete in the finals Sunday.

400-meter dash: Patrick Feeney had a first-place finish (47.94), while Edward Hitchler finished seventh in 48.70 and Brendan Dougherty was the 10th-place finisher in 49.17. Feeney and Hitchler will compete in the finals Sunday.

Mile: Jeremy Rae was the third-place finisher in 4:11.65, while J.P. Malette finished in 4:13.15 for seventh place. Both will compete in the finals tomorrow.

200-meter dash: Edward Hitchler had a fifth-place finish in 22.13, while Miklos Szebeny finished 13th in 22.29. Hitchler competes in the finals Sunday.

1,000-meter run: Johnathan Shawel was the fourth-place finisher in 2:26.49 and Jordan Carlson finished eighth in 2:26.06.

800-meter run: Jack Howard finished in third place in 1:51.61, while Kevin Labus finished in fifth place (1:51.69), both compete tomorrow in the finals.

5,000-meter run: Dan Jackson finished seventh in 14:23.07, followed by Kelly Lynch in eighth place (14:24.66), together the duo picked up three points. Martin Grady finished 21st (15;12.93) and Paul Springer finished 22nd in 15:20.53.

Weight Throw: Greg Davis finished second (19.68m), scoring eight points for the Irish. John Belcher was the 10th-place finisher (16.36m), followed by Mitchell Gormley in 12th place (16.29m) and Denes Veres in 14th place (15.99m).

Pole Vault: Kevin Schipper claimed the crown, vaulting 5.25m. Andrew Kolbeck was the seventh-place finisher (4.65m).

Long Jump: Logan Renwick finished in seventh place (6.82m) and added two points to the Irish score.

Distance Medley Relay: Notre Dame finished in fourth place in 9:52.65 and scored five points.
