Meijer Stores To Offer Women's Basketball Commemorative Coke Bottles

Sept. 27, 2001

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame, in conjunction with area Meijer stores and Coca-Cola, has produced a specially-designed Coke bottle to commemorate the 2001 Irish women’s basketball NCAA championship team.

These unique eight-ounce glass bottles are being sold in six-packs for $2.99 at Meijer stores in South Bend, Mishawaka and Goshen, and they will be available only while supplies last. They feature the Notre Dame logo, along with the words “Women’s Basketball – 2001 National Champions.”

“We have developed a good partnership between Meijer, Notre Dame and Coke,” Meijer store director Rick Zeeff said. “As part of ‘Team Notre Dame,’ we felt it was a natural continuation to honor a great group of student-athletes like the Irish women’s basketball team. We believe this team has permanently changed the face of women’s basketball at Notre Dame and we are proud to recognize that.”

Last season, under Naismith Coach of the Year Muffet McGraw, the Irish posted a 34-2 record en route to their first-ever national championship. Seven monogram winners return from that squad and will team up with the third-best recruiting class in the country to form the backbone of the 2001-02 unit. Notre Dame will begin defense of its NCAA title Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. (EST) when it plays host to Valparaiso at the Joyce Center.
