NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame seniors Justin McGeeney (Ames, Iowa/Ames) and Nate Norman (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams) have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V men’s soccer team. The duo rank in a tie for second on the team with 11 points apiece. McGeeney, a forward, has five goals and one assist, while Norman, a midfielder, leads the team with seven assists to go along with two goals.
McGeeney carries a 3.38 cumulative grade-point average as a finance major in the Mendoza College of Business. He has started all 19 games in which he has played this season. The Iowa native was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28 following a two-goal effort in a 4-1 win over No. 8 Creighton. McGeeney has tallied 15 goals and 33 points during his four-year career, while playing in 69 games.
Norman possesses a 3.35 GPA as a theology major in the College of Arts and Letters. He has started all 20 games this season in the Fighting Irish midfield. The senior dished out a career-high two assists in wins over Creighton and Providence this season. In his career, Norman has played in 79 matches, totaling seven goals and 13 assists for 27 points.
Joining the Notre Dame duo on the all-district five squad were goalkeeper Chay Cain (Indiana); midfielders Adam Gartner (Eastern Illinois), Markian Zyga (Loyola (Ill.)); defenders Jason Pele (Evansville), Paul Mongillo (Butler), Todd Reedy (Bradley), Billy Meier (Wisconsin-Milwaukee); and forwards Steve Sperl (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Victor Diaz (Wisconsin).
Those names will now appear on the national ballot for a chance to be voted as an Academic All-American. Last season, Notre Dame’s John Stephens (class of 2006) was tabbed as a second-team Academic All-American. He was the fourth student-athlete in program history to garner official Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Notre Dame (13-5-2) will find out its NCAA Tournament destination when selections are announced on Monday, Nov. 6 between 4 and 5 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
