NOTRE DAME, Indiana — Notre Dame freshman tight end Michael Mayer has been named to the Football Writers Association of America’s Freshman All-American Watch List.
Through four games, Mayer has made one start, totaling seven receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. The true freshman from Independence, Kentucky, has caught a pass in each game this season, averaging 11.4 yards per catch.
The Covington Catholic product scored his first-career touchdown in the Irish’s win vs. Florida State, marking him as Notre Dame’s first true freshman tight end to score a touchdown since Kyle Rudolph in 2008 against Purdue.
Mayer is the fourth Irish player in two seasons to be named to the initial list, following punter Jay Bramblett, defensive lineman Jacob Lacey and offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson in 2019. Safety Kyle Hamilton was added to the midseason watch list in 2019 and was selected to the 2019 FWAA Freshman All-American Team.
