Matt Tallman Promoted To Associate Head Coach For Men's Swimming And Diving

July 6, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving head coach Tim Welsh has recently announced the promotion of Matt Tallman to associate head coach for men’s swimming and diving. Tallman is entering his sixth season at Notre Dame, with the first five coming as an assistant coach for the program. He has been instrumental in the unprecedented success of the Fighting Irish, which has included back-to-back BIG EAST Conference championships.

Tallman came to Notre Dame in 2001 and since then the Irish have posted a 45-22 dual-meet record. Notre Dame cracked the CSCAA top-20 dual-meet rankings poll for the first time ever in the fall of 2004 as the Irish debuted at No. 21. Later on that season, Notre Dame dominated in winning the program’s first-ever BIG EAST title. During the 2005-06 season, the Fighting Irish climbed as high as No. 18 in the rankings before going on to capture their second straight BIG EAST crown.

“I am very grateful to Tim Welsh and the athletic administration for having the faith in me for such a promotion,” says Tallman. “It’s been a privilege to coach at the University of Notre Dame for the past five seasons and I am extremely excited about and look forward to the season ahead.”

The efforts of Tallman have paid dividends in the pool, as the Irish have broken University swimming records over 50 times in the past five years. The Irish have also claimed five Notre Dame Invitational titles and the program’s first-ever win over a ranked opponent as the Fighting Irish defeated No. 17 Pittsburgh during the 2004-05 season. Another milestone for the program was achieved in 2005 as the Irish sent their first swimmer, Tim Kegelman, to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. This past season, Notre Dame diver Michael Bulfin also qualified for the NCAAs.

Over the past two seasons, the Irish have captured eight BIG EAST event titles and 17 student-athletes have garnered all-BIG EAST honors. In addition to those achievements, Notre Dame swimmers have established numerous NCAA consideration cuts.

The Fighting Irish have also excelled in the classroom under the watch of Tallman and Welsh. Notre Dame has consistently ranked in the top-20 nationally for semester grade-point average among men’s swimming and diving teams during Tallman’s tenure.

“Matt’s promotion is a direct reflection of his contribution to our team’s success over the past five years,” states Welsh, who recently signed a contract extension. “As much as anything else, Matt’s focus on recruiting development and performance excellence has had a large impact on our improvement. This is an appropriate promotion for Matt and I think it reflects the way things are. We operate like associates and I’m happy and proud to be able to call him associate coach.”

A 1997 graduate of Catholic University, Tallman swam four seasons and captured 11 titles at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships. He set school and conference records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, along with the 200 and 400 medley relays.
