Matt Kavanagh Named Cascade Rookie Of The Week

Feb. 21, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman attackman Matt Kavanagh has been named the Cascade Rookie of the Week for his four-goal, one-assist performance in the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team’s 13-5 season-opening victory at Duke.

Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade/Hotchkiss) started in the Fighting Irish attack and netted three second-quarter goals, including two in Notre Dame’s 6-0 run to start the game. He also scored with just five seconds left in the first half to give the Irish an 8-1 halftime lead.

Kavanagh assisted on the tally that gave Notre Dame a 10-4 lead late in the third quarter. His final goal put the Irish up 12-4 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Cascade Rookie of the Week will be picked by the Inside Lacrosse staff and be unveiled on InsideLacrosse.com every Wednesday.

Inside Lacrosse ranked Kavanagh as the top post-graduate recruit in the class of 2012. Kavanagh helped the United States capture the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 World Championships title this past summer. He had 20 goals and 11 assists in seven games and was named tournament MVP and the most outstanding attackman of the event.

The third-ranked Fighting Irish return to action Sunday at No. 8 Penn State. Face-off is slated for noon (ET) in University Park, Pa.
